"To conceal anything from those to whom I am attached, is not in my nature. I can never close my lips where I have opened my heart." Master Humphrey is an old, crippled man living in London. To combat his loneliness, he starts a little club, Master Humphrey’s Clock, and invites its members to read from their manuscripts. Delightful, supernatural, romantic and sometimes a little creepy, this is the collection of their stories. Readers familiar with Dickens will perhaps come across characters and stories they already know as it serves as an introduction to, among others, Barnaby Rudge and The Old Curiosity Shop. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English author, social critic, and philanthropist. Much of his writing first appeared in small instalments in magazines and was widely popular. Among his most famous novels are Oliver Twist (1839), David Copperfield (1850), and Great Expectations (1861).

Excerpt from Master Humphrey's Clock, Vol. 1 When the author commenced this Work, he proposed to himself three objects. First. To establish a periodical, which should enable him to present, under one general head, and not as separate and distinct publications, certain fictions which he had it in contemplation to write. Secondly. To produce these Tales in weekly numbers hoping that to shorten the intervals of communication between himself and his readers, would be to knit more closely the pleasant relations they had held, for Forty Months. Thirdly. In the execution of this weekly task, to have as much regard as its exigencies would permit, to each story as a whole, and to the possibility of its publication at some distant day, apart from the machinery in which it had its origin. The characters of Master Humphrey and his three friends, and the little fancy of the clock, were the result of these considerations. When he sought to interest his readers in those who talked, and read, and listened, he revived Mr. Pickwick and his humble friends; not with any intention of reopening an exhausted and abandoned mine, but to connect them in the thoughts of those whose favourites they had been, with the tranquil enjoyments of Master Humphrey. Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-Master Humphrey's Clock by Charles Dickens. It was a weekly magazine edited and written entirely by Charles Dickens that was published from April 4, 1840 to December 4, 1841. It began with a framed narration, in which Master Humphrey tells us about himself and his small circle of friends, including Mr. Pickwick, and also reveals his fondness for storytelling. Several short stories were published in this magazine, as well as the novels The Antique Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Dickens is originally believed to have intended the first one to be a short story like the others that had appeared in Master Humphrey's Watch, but after publishing a few chapters, and in the face of declining magazine sales, he decided to extend it. to novel. Master Humphrey appears as a first-person narrator during the first three chapters of The Antique Shop, but then disappears after claiming, "And now that in this story I have come so far with my own figure and introduced these characters to the reader, for convenience I will detach myself from the narrative from its future plots, and let those who have prominent and necessary roles in them speak and act for themselves.Charles Dickens - Charles John Huffam Dickens FRSA (February 7, 1812 - June 9, 1870) was an English writer and social critic.
