Excerpt from Medical Guide to the Mineral Waters of France and Its Wintering Stations In offering to the Medical Profession - and through them to the Public - this book on the Mineral Waters of France, I have endeavoured to be as concise as possible in order to furnish the busy practitioner with the means of ascertaining at a glance the chemical composition, the therapeutical value, and the geographical situation of the most important French Thermal Stations. I have availed myself of the latest monographs and other writings on the subject in order to bring the information up to date; and if I am unable to name all my French confreres to whom I am under an obligation, it is partly because they are too numerous, and also because I could not have named them alone without doing some injustice to the hardworking men of the past generation, who did so much to increase the reputation of our mineral springs. But there is one name which I could not omit to mention - it is that of Dr Durand-Fardel, who has perhaps done more than all others to elevate hydro-therapeutics to the position of a special science. Excerpt from The Baths of France, Central Germany, and Switzerland Many years have elapsed since my account of the Watering Places of the Continent' ap peared, the subsequent editions were published under the title of the Baths of Germany, and contained more detailed information respecting their remedial properties some brief notices be ing appended of the chief French and Swiss Baths, which were comparatively little resorted to by English visitors. The-number has, however, greatly increased within the last two or three years; and I have reason to believe, now that the treatment of chronic diseases by means of mineral waters is becoming more general, that as these French Baths are at the present day so much easier of access than formerly, a large proportion of in. Excerpt from The Therapeutics of Mineral Springs and Climates This work is divided into two parts. The first is devoted to the study of mineral springs; and as the introductory chapters are concerned with certain general considerations, including the classification of mineral waters, it has been possible to adopt the obviously convenient plan of describing the vast number of mineral-water resorts in alphabetical order, and those resorts that have appeared, for various reasons, to be of minor importance to English invalids have been printed, in smaller type, at the end of each alphabetical group, and described as briefly as possible. Excerpt from The Mineral Waters and Spas of New Zealand With the constant advance of knowledge, and the consequent incessant recrystallization of our ideas, the medical world is embarrassed with an ever-increasing flood of literature. So great is this flood that one feels that some very good excuse indeed is needed before one adds even a single drop to the ocean of verbiage. There can be only two excuses - either something new can be told, or something old can be put more clearly than it has been put before. I hold myself especially fortunate in that, to a great extent, I can avail myself of the former pretext and can claim the privileges of the pioneer. Beyond a small pamphlet by Dr. Ginders, published some fifteen years ago, dealing with the waters of Rotorua and Hanmer before those spas were to any extent developed, there has been, so far as I am aware, no work dealing with the mineral waters of New Zealand from a medical point of view. In 1902 I was engaged by the Government of New Zea land to advise in the development of the mineral-water health resorts of the country, and this has been my work ever since.
