Metabolism By In Vivo NMR reviews and extends the experimental and theoretical reports concerning in vivo NMR, a pioneering approach that offers versatile new ways of studying metabolic pathways. Perfectly timed to coincide with recent findings that demonstrate the novelty and strength of this approach, the book covers recent applications in biochemistry, medicine, and psychology; in vivo NMR techniques; MCA; glucose metabolism focusing on glycogen; the value of muscle glycogen measurements in exercise; and much more. This book is unique in linking in vivo 13C NMR measurements of neuronal activity and energetics with applications to functional imaging and certain disease states Provides a fundamental neurochemical explanation of brain activity applicable to functional imaging, theories of neuronal activity and disease states, e.g. epilepsy, psychiatric diseases and developmental disorders Novel and potentially controversial Will inspire future research directions.

This volume is based on a series of lectures delivered at a one-day teach ing symposium on functional and metabolic aspects of NMR measure ments held at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School on 1st September 1985 as a part of the European Nuclear Medicine Society Congress. Currently the major emphasis in medical NMR in vivo is on its poten tial to image and display abnormalities in conventional radiological im ages, providing increased contrast between normal and abnormal tissue, improved definition of vasculature, and possibly an increased potential for differential diagnosis. Although these areas are undeniably of major importance, it is probable that NMR will continue to complement con ventional measurement methods. The major potential benefits to be de rived from in vivo NMR measurements are likely to arise from its use as an instrument for functional and metabolic studies in both clinical re search and in the everyday management of patients. It is to this area that this volume is directed.

Metabolomics, the global characterisation of the small molecule complement involved in metabolism, has evolved into a powerful suite of approaches for understanding the global physiological and pathological processes occurring in biological organisms. The diversity of metabolites, the wide range of metabolic pathways and their divergent biological contexts require a range of methodological strategies and techniques. Methodologies for Metabolomics provides a comprehensive description of the newest methodological approaches in metabolomic research. The most important technologies used to identify and quantify metabolites, including nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry, are highlighted. The integration of these techniques with classical biological methods is also addressed. Furthermore, the book presents statistical and chemometric methods for evaluation of the resultant data. The broad spectrum of topics includes a vast variety of organisms, samples and diseases, ranging from in vivo metabolomics in humans and animals to in vitro analysis of tissue samples, cultured cells and biofluids.
