Ultrasonic Methods of Non-Destructive Testing covers the basic principles and practices of ultrasonic testing, starting with the basic theory of vibration and propagation, design and properties and probes, and then proceeding to the principles and practice of the various ultrasonic techniques for different types of components and structures, both metallic and non-metallic. The design and operation of various types of equipment are covered and references to appropriate national and international standards are provided. Numerous applications are discussed comprehensively and special attention is paid to latest developments. A large number of references is provided so as to enable the reader to obtain further information.

This second edition builds on the success of the first and covers the widespread introduction of computer technology, particularly the digitisation of data into the many branches of NDT. It surveys the new European (CEN) Standards and provisional CEN Standards on NDT, many of which are replacing British Standards. New NDT techniques not included in the first edition are also included.

Ultrasonic testing is a relatively new branch of science and industry. The development of ultrasonic testing started in the late 1920s. At the beginning, the fundamentals of this method were borrowed from basic physics, geometrical and wave optics, acoustics and seismology. Later it became clear that some of these theories and calculation methods could not always explain the phenomena observed in many specific cases of ultrasonic testing. Without knowing the nuances of the ultrasonic wave propagation in the test object it is impossible to design effective inspection technique and search units for it realization. This book clarifies the theoretical differences of ultrasonics from the other wave propagation theories presenting both basics of physics in the wave propagation, elementary mathematic and advanced practical applications. Almost every specific technique presented in this book is proofed by actual experimental data and examples of calculations.

Safety in the Process Industries aims to ensure the safety of people involved in process plants, especially those who face its immediate hazards and dangers. The book is divided into four parts. Part I covers topics such as the history of process hazards and attitudes in health and safety; laws concerned with the health and safety in the process industry; and the definitions of different terms related to health and safety. Part II discusses the electrical, chemical, and physical hazards in the process industries, as well as the dangers of flammability and corrosion. Part III talks about hazard control design; protective instrumentation; and maintenance and inspection. Part IV tackles topics related to the management of health and safety in industry processes such as emergency planning; safety training; and protection the working environment. The text is recommended for people concerned in the management, development, planning, design, construction, operation, inspection and maintenance of process plants, as well as those who oversee its safety.

Nondestructive testing of solid material using ultrasonic waves, for defects such as cavities, nonbonding, and strength variations, is treated in this book from the physical fundamentals of ultrasonics and materials up to the most sophisticated methods. The book is written at a level which should make it accessible to readers with some knowledge of technical mathematics. Physical laws are explained in elementary terms, and more sophisticated treatments are also indicated. After the fundamentals, instrumentation and its application is extensively reported. Tricks and observations from thirty years of experience in the field are included. The third part of the book presents test problems related to special materials or ranges of modern heavy industry, including recent applications such as those in nuclear power plants. This fourth edition features improved presentation of certain fundamental physical facts, updated reports on electronic instrumentation, and new applications in the nuclear and space industries.
