Russia is a huge storehouse of natural resources, including oil, gas, and other energy sources, which she can trade with the rest of the world for advanced technology and wheat. In this book, leading experts evaluate the Soviet potential in major energy and industrial raw materials, giving special attention to implications for the world economy to the end of the twentieth century. The authors examine the mineral and forest resources that the Soviet Union has developed and may yet develop to provide exports during the 1980s. They discuss the regional dimension of these resources, especially in Siberia and the Soviet Far East; individual mineral raw materials, such as petroleum, natural gas, timber, iron ore, manganese, and gold; and finally the role of raw materials in Soviet foreign trade. The authors, representing the United States, Canada, and Great Britain, are primarily geographers, but they include economists, political scientists, and a geologist. Their work is based on primary sources (for most of these reports, current information is no longer being released to researchers) and on interviews with Soviet officials.

With the dissolution of the country in 1991, the former Soviet republics are now exercising complete control over their mining industries. The new Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) consists of several new nations, well-endowed in hydrocarbons, metals, and industrial materials; efforts are now underway to boost development activities and attract foreign investment. Commonwealth members today are implementing policies to regulate energy and mineral development and enhance economic growth. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the energy and minerals industries of the CIS and other former Soviet republics outside the Commonwealth. Prospects for international cooperation and trade in hydrocarbons, metals, and nonmetals are examined, as are opportunities for joint ventures and technology transfers in mining. Economic relations between the CIS and several Asian nations are also analyzed. Contributors to the book from throughout the Commonwealth, Asia, Europe, and North America have a wide variety of backgrounds in the energy and mineral fields, including government, academia, and industry.

Innovation-Based Development of the Mineral Resources Sector: Challenges and Prospects contains the contributions presented at the XI Russian-German Raw Materials Conference (Potsdam, Germany, 7-8 November 2018). The Russian-German Raw Materials Conference is held within the framework of the “Permanent Russian-German Forum on the Issues of the Use of Raw Materials”, which has as goals to develop new approaches to effectively use energy, mineral and renewable natural resources and to initiate cooperation in the field of sustainability and environmental protection. The contributions cover current trends in the development of raw materials markets and the world economy, the state of the environment and new technologies applied in the sector, effectively responding to modern challenges. The 63 accepted papers are grouped into four main sections: • Mineral exploration and mining • Mining services • Processing of raw materials • Other Innovation-Based Development of the Mineral Resources Sector: Challenges and Prospects will be of interest to academics and researchers involved in the mineral resources sector, but also to professionals in the public, foreign trade and education fields, and representatives of major corporations and professional associations.

The Industrial College of the Armed Forces was established to prepare selected officers of the Armed Forces, both Regular and Reserve, and civilian executives for important managerial positions in time of emergency. Instruction is provided in three forms: (1) resident, (2) correspondence, and (3) traveling lecture teams. The base for all three types of instruction is the same.

Experience attests to the great value of the correspondence course. The subject matter is presented in small volumes for convenience, each volume representing a major division of the subject. They are reorganized and revised from time to time to bring them up to date and to place emphasis as change may dictate upon those phases of the course deemed most important. Considerable background and illustrative materials are included as a basis for broad and comprehensive education in the field of world resources and their use in support of national objectives.

The texts consist of materials written by members of the faculty of the Industrial College, of selected lectures delivered at the College, and of selections from various publications. The texts in use were prepared mainly by the Correspondence Text Committee of the Education Division of the College. Current revisions of these texts are prepared by the Branches of the Education Division and coordinated by the Committee, which consists of Dr. Benjamin H. Williams, Chairman, Dr. Harold J. Clem, Dr. Louis C. Hunter, Dr. Andrew J. Kress, and Dr. Samuel H. McGuire. Suggestions and recommendations are based on the instructional policy of the Correspondence Study Branch as well as on student reactions to text materials.
