Created as a companion for the popular fourth-grade textbook Missouri Then and Now by Perry McCandless and William E. Foley, this workbook provides students additional insight into Missouri's rich history with cognitive activities and writing assignments. "Missouri Then and Now" Activity Book coordinates perfectly with the Grade 4 Benchmark and the new Content Specifications for Statewide Assessment and Grade Level Expectations. Using a mixture of traditional learning activities along with open-ended constructed response questions, this book promotes the kind of imaginative thinking that is required for students taking the MAP (Missouri Assessment Program) test. Each chapter has Vocabulary and Objectives pages. Students are encouraged not only to look up the definitions of the vocabulary words, but also to use them in sentences and draw accompanying illustrations. The Objectives pages are perfect for note-taking during class and while reading chapters of Missouri Then and Now. These pages take the place of the traditional fill-in-the-blank study guides of the past, and students become responsible for their learning. Also included are Assessment pages for use at the end of each chapter. Utilizing short questions and answers, as well as multipart questions, they cover all the material taught in the chapter. Some chapters also have cause-and-effect charts and timelines. In the teacher's edition, scoring guides are provided for the writing assignments, diagrams, and other projects. They are designed so that teachers can decide the criteria to be scored and the points they wish to award each item. The scoring guides can be adapted by teachers who decide to assign other activities. Blank history trading cards, which can be used with any chapter a teacher chooses, are also provided. "Missouri Then and Now" Activity Book challenges students at the same time that it allows for flexibility in teaching and scoring. Teachers decide when students may use the textbook as a reference, as well as whether to use the scoring guides in scoring responses. The activity book also lets the student have flexibility. For many of the activities, students can choose the type of response or diagram they wish to use to demonstrate their knowledge. With its stimulating activities, this book is the perfect accompaniment to Missouri Then and Now. Students willbenefit greatly as they become familiar with the rich history of their state, and teachers will find it extremely useful as a learning tool because it encourages students to broaden their thinking processes.

Now available in a new and enlarged edition is the popular fourth-grade textbook, Missouri Then and Now. Closely correlated with Missouri's Official Course Content Standards and profusely illustrated, with color pictures and maps distributed throughout the book, this state-of-the-art text promises to meet the instructional needs of twenty-first- century classrooms. Teachers will welcome the many special features designed to facilitate the mastery of the basic competencies measured by the Missouri Assessment Program. Missouri Then and Now incorporates geography, civics, economics, anthropology, and sociology with history to give students an opportunity to learn about their world on several levels: the community (the origin and subsequent growth of towns), the region (the occupation and settlement of the Mississippi River Valley), the nation (the struggle for statehood, the westward movement, the Civil War, and the depression of the 1930s) and the world (exploration, world wars, the global economy, and the worldwide communications network). This edition also adds valuable new insights concerning the importance of scientific and technological innovations. Young Missourians will be introduced to a host of remarkable women, men, and children with stories that will help bring history to life. Individuals who have made special contributions to the state are featured in the "Famous Missourians" sections placed throughout the book, and the routines of daily life and ordinary people are also accorded significant coverage. An important new feature in this edition, "In Their Own Words," gives students the opportunity to read excerpts from actual source documents. These brief passages from letters, diaries, reports, and other historical documents, which have been edited and made accessible to fourth graders, are ideally suited for active learning. In addition to its many new features, Missouri Then and Now retains the attributes that made earlier editions practical for teaching history. Each chapter begins with guiding questions intended to help students formulate their own ideas and initiate individual and group research activities. A listing of recent books, videos, and web sites located at the end of each chapter will lead students to varied information sources specifically related to Missouri topics. The new words identified for each chapter and the glossary placed in the appendix remain useful tools for vocabulary building exercises. A separate Teacher's Guide includes suggested student research topics for each chapter along with guiding questions. An accompanying matrix helps teachers identify the applicable knowledge and process standards and includes sample learning activities appropriate to the specific topic. These and a host of other attractive features will make Missouri Then and Now a popular choice in Missouri's fourth-grade classrooms.

St. Louis Then and Now is a captivating chronicle of history and change. It pairs photographs over a century old with specially commissioned views of the same scenes as they exist today to show the evolution of St. Louis from the pioneers’ "Gateway to the West" to a thriving and dynamic city of the 21st century.Established by French fur-trader Pierre Laclede in 1764 and named in honor of the patron saint of France, St. Louis was in its earliest days a trading outpost near the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Laclede showed remarkable foresight, pronouncing that "by its locality and central position," St. Louis was to become "one of the finest of cities." His vision was accurate: with the advantages of a natural sand levee and sheltering limestone bluffs, the central "city by the river" grew rapidly over the following decades. After Jefferson purchased the western territories, including St. Louis, from the French in 1804, the town became one of the busiest of American cities during the period of western expansion. St. Louis was the "Gateway to the West," chief provisioner and jumping-off point for westward-bound explorers, adventurers, and gold prospectors. The following centuries have seen St. Louis grow inexorably into Laclede’s "finest of cities." Its location on the Mississippi, once jammed with the fabulous steamboats that brought Mark Twain to the city, and its heritage as a heartland of ragtime, jazz, and blues music have given St. Louis a distinctive flavor that today blends the quaint and historic with the modern.Sites include: SS Admiral, Eads Bridge, the Levee, the Gateway Arch, Old Courthouse, the Garment District, Union Station, City Hall, Soulard Market, Anheuser-Busch Brewery, Missouri Botanical Gardens, St. Louis University, the Theater District, Sportsman’s Park, the 1904 World’s Fair, St. Louis Art Museum, Cathedral of St. Louis
