Mortal Stakes Faint Thunder

Timothy Murphy lives on the Great Plains. He has been a grain and hog farmer and, like Wallace Stevens, an insurance salesman, but the twin joys of his life are poetry and hunting. Murphy's poetry explores faith, family, spirituality, death, farming, friendship, love, and sexuality, yet it is profoundly rooted in place -- the Red River watershed in North Dakota and western Minnesota. He tries to make sense of the wide sweep of the northern plains, to explore how place shapes poetry and how poetry shapes one’s experience of place.

In reviewing the Hudson Review’s history of publishing poetry in translation since 1948, the editors have compiled a collection that highlights the work of major American and English poets, most of whom are prominent in their own right, who, for the last half-century, have made accessible through their translations the work of their international colleagues. “Poets Translate Poets” contains translations of classical Latin and Greek poetry, classical Chinese and medieval East Asian verse, canonical French, German, and Italian writers, twentieth-century Latin American poetry, and a sampling of works from Persian, South Asian, South East Asian, Scandinavian, and Eastern European poets.

Twenty-seven of the poems in this collection present a tragicomic dialogue with William Shakespeare, through the persona of the Dark Lady addressed in his latter sonnets. Over seventy others present portraits-in-poetry of shops, performers and vendors in the famous French Quarter of New Orleans: candelabras, Carnival and cockroaches; the catastrophic events of the Louisiana hurricanes of 2005, and that state's ensuing environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.
