Excerpt from My Reminiscences, Vol. 1 of 2 Once upon a time an Italian nobleman built himself a funereal monument. On being asked why he did not leave the care of this work to his relatives after his death, he replied that he had little confidence in their taking the trouble or going to the expense of doing so. Agreeing with this Italian, I have compiled these recollections from my old journals - diaries which will probably serve to light the kitchen fire when their author has departed. At any rate, I save others the trouble of looking through a large amount of ill-written MSS.; and I hope that these Reminiscences will not prove entirely without interest to the general reader, on whose indulgence I throw myself. Excerpt from Reminiscences, Vol. 1 of 2 I wish to make some acknowledgments of kindly as sistance given to me in the production of my volumes. Mr. John Albert Bright, for instance, has been good enough to allow me to publish some of the many letters which I received from his father, the late John Bright. Two of the personal descriptions which appear in the second volume, that of Mr. Dillon and that of Mr. Sex ton, appeared in substance some few years ago in the columns of the Daily News, ' and are, except for some slight alterations and additions, merely republished here. The conductors of the 'daily News' have kind ly given me their permission to reproduce these pages of personal description. The mention of the Daily News' reminds me of a certain fragment of autobiog raphy which I take leave to introduce into my pref ace. For nearly a quarter of a century I was a regular contributor of leading articles to the 'daily News.' My friend Sir John R. Robinson was then, as he is now, manager of the paper. More than twenty years ago a great firm of London publishers formed the idea of giving to the world a history of the present reign. Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Literary and Clerical Life, Vol. 1 of 2 I began these notes some years ago, before the pleasant rush of recent autobiographical literature had fairly set in. The work is somewhat auto biographical, but not a biography; I have gone as little as might be into merely personal details, which in my own case, except to a few, might prove extremely uninteresting, but have gathered up some of my impressions and experiences. Intending to make it a home work, I have excluded various chapters on foreign travel in various parts of France, Italy, Denmark, Germany, and Spain. I believe that any book that seeks honestly and fairly to set forth a personal experience may hope to have some measure of use and interest. One of my fair friends has informed me, in the dialect of the day, that I have hardly been. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In this searing indictment of the rationale behind the First World War, Paul Ham argues that European leaders did not ‘sleepwalk’ into war, but that they fully accepted and understood the consequences of the decisions they were making. In August 1914, the European powers plunged the world into a war that would kill or wound 37 million people, tear down the fabric of society, uproot ancient political systems and set the world on course for the bloodiest century in human history. On the eve of the 100th anniversary of that terrible year, Ham takes the reader on a journey into the labyrinth, to reveal the complexity, the layered motives, the flawed and disturbed minds that drove the world to war. What emerges is a clear sense of what happened and why. 'To understand the past,' Ham concludes, 'and share that understanding, is the chief role of the historian. To understand the past is to liberate ourselves from its awful shadow and steel ourselves against it happening again.'
