Emerging Nanotechnologies in Dentistry, Second Edition, brings together an international team of experts from the fields of materials science, nanotechnology and dentistry to explain these new materials and their applications for the restoration, fixation, replacement or regeneration of hard and soft tissues in and about the oral cavity and craniofacial region. New nanomaterials are leading to a range of emerging dental treatments that utilize more biomimetic materials that more closely duplicate natural tooth structure (or bone, in the case of implants). Each chapter has been comprehensively revised from the first edition, and new chapters cover important advances in graphene based materials for dentistry, liposome based nanocarriers and the neurotoxicity of nanomaterials used in dentistry. Offers a comprehensive professional reference for the subject covering materials fabrication and use of materials for all major diagnostic and therapeutic dental applications: repair, restoration, regeneration, implants and prevention Focuses in depth on the materials manufacturing processes involved, with emphasis on pre-clinical and clinical applications, use and biocompatibility Examines the use of novel nanomaterials including graphene in dentistry, exploring how these may best be used

This book covers two increasingly prominent aspects of dentistry: nanotechnology and ozone. Nanotechnology has rapidly expanded into all areas of science; it offers significant alternative ways of solving scientific and medical questions and problems. In dentistry, nanotechnology has been exploited in the development of restorative materials with significant success. The recent advances in nanotechnology could hold promise in bringing about a paradigm shift in the dental field. Although there are numerous complex therapies being developed to treat many diseases, their clinical use requires careful consideration of the expense of synthesis and implementation. The world is moving towards non-invasive methods of treatment and the principle of ‘extension for prevention’ is losing its popularity. The energized form of oxygen is ozone, which has varied properties like anti-microbial activity, biocompatibility, disinfection and healing properties. As such, this book shows that it has a major scope of application in the fields of medicine and dentistry.

Nanomaterials are those materials with componentsless than 100 nm in at least one dimension, includingclusters of atoms, grains less than 100 nm in size, fibers that are less than 100 nm diameter, films lessthan 100 nm in thickness, nanoholes, and compositesthat are a combination of these. The compositioncan be any combination of naturally occurring elements.Because nanoparticles have significant surfaceeffects, size effects, and quantum effects, nanocomposites usually exhibit much better performanceproperties than traditional materials. Theimproved relevant properties include enhancedtoughness, stiffness, improved transparency, increasedscratch, abrasion, solvent and heat resistance, and decreased gas permeability. In addition, nanoparticles have special properties, includingchemical, optical, magnetic, and electro-opticalproperties, which differ from those of either individualmolecules or bulk species. These significantproperties of nanoparticles meet the intriguingdemand to design multifunctional nanocompositefilms, which cover properties of both inorganic andorganic materials and exhibit immense prospectsfor developing light-emitting diodes, nonlinear opticaldevices, resistors, sensors, electrically conductivefilms, and gas separation membranes. In the field of periodontics, Nanotechnonlogy has been used primarily to disrupt the biofilm, in the treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity, as local drug delivery agents, bone replacement materials,in photodynamic therapy,as scaffolds in tissue engineering and in dental implants and the results were promising when compared to conventional therapies.
