There is currently considerable focus on psychosocial issues for persons with aphasia and their significant others. However, there has been little unifying work that brings diverse interdisciplinary perspectives together to understand the impact of aphasia and other neurogenic communication disorders on the social construction and mediation of self or identity. In this book, the authors explore this idea of social construction of self as it relates to the human need to create, share, and modify life stories, particularly when confronting major life changes. Their premise is that impaired communication can have a profound impact on one’s perception of self and one’s ability to negotiate the social reconstruction of self in the context of a neurological disorder. The nature and extent of impact varies, as seen in the book’s in-depth examination of narrative self for persons living with aphasia, ALS, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia, as well as those aging without impairment. The authors present theoretical grounding for using the concepts of self and the idea of a social and cultural tool kit that enables clients to interact with others and to define themselves in the context of those around them. Once diagnosed with a disability, there is a risk that this label can become the primary status both for the person diagnosed as well as for their family. This reification of the diagnosis can be oppressive because it subjugates humanity in such a way that everything a person does can be interpreted as linked to their disability. Drawing on narrative approaches to identity in psychology and social sciences, the bio-psycho-social model and a holistic approach to disabilities, the chapters in this book understand disability as constructed in discourse, as negotiated among speaking subjects in social contexts, and as emergent. On Neurogenic Communication Disorders: Original Short Stories and Case Studies is a unique book. It is a collection of short stories and case studies about persons with neurogenic communication disorders. The short stories are based on people I have known as friends, acquaintances, or patients. The characters in the short stories are based on one person or a composite of several individuals. I have placed these characters in interesting fictional situations which provide a vehicle for showing their mettle in dealing with their communication disorders and life challenges. The case studies are based on actual clinical cases and situations, but literary license has been taken to make them reader-friendly and interesting. This book of short stories and case studies is not a scholarly clinical treatise on neurogenic communication disorders, nor does it aspire to be one. While I believe it provides accurate information about neurogenic communication disorders, it is a work of fiction and simply a different vehicle for understanding these complex and often devastating medical conditions.
