Not illustrated. 1892 edition. Excerpt: ... and by an admirable induction has established a number of propositions as to the nature of the art of the Hellenistic world; whence we may learn much as to the emotions and perceptions of that world. Of the Greek kingdoms of Bactria and Cabul scarcely any memorial remains, except the abundant and interesting coins from which General Cunningham has been able to extract a surprising amount of information. Using these and other sources, and especially the masterly history of Droysen, who has brought all the rivulets of information together and united them into a stream of narrative, we will endeavour slightly to sketch the main characteristics of Hellenism, and to estimate the effects of the conquests of Alexander on Greece and Macedonia, on the various provinces of the old Persian Empire, in fact on the whole Oriental world, from Epirus on the west to India on the east, and from Pontus in the north to Egypt and Libya on the south. How slight such a sketch must be within the present limits of space, it is hardly necessary to point out . In no country were the changes produced by Alexander more striking than in his own Macedonia. Before his time and his father's, that land was a kingdom of the old Homeric type, whose ruler was aval; avSpcov, but no despotic lord, and which was full of a sturdy and free population of ploughmen and shepherds. Even Philip never places his effigy on his coins nor calls himself King. But the Antigonid princes who afterwards ruled in Macedon were despots of the Asiatic type. They wore the diadem, were surrounded by a court, and were the centre of a bureaucratic and military system. They regarded their people as taxable property and as material for the manufacture of armies. And that people itself was sadly fallen...

Excerpt from New Chapters in the History of Greek Literature, Vol. 3: Some Recent Discoveries in Greek Poetry and Prose of the Classical and Later Periods The first feeling with which readers will open this book will be that of regret at not seeing the name of Mr. Barber on the title-page. It has only been his engagement with the publica tion of other classical work which has prevented him from taking part in this Series; but the book owes very much to the advice which he gave in laying out the plan of it. It had not been the original purpose to treat Of earlier and standard authors, but the work grew under our hands; many reviewers also and other scholars desired that the record of the new literary discoveries should be made as complete as possible; and, as in the two previous Series, each contributor has treated his subject in his own way, subject to revision and discussion. "I have always thought of Christmas time . . . as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely."So wrote Charles Dickens in "A Christmas Carol," his tale of miserable miser Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation into a kind and caring benefactor after visits on one Christmas Eve from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Dickens's short novel is one of the most-loved works in the English language and the best-known celebration of the Yuletide season. This special pocket edition of "A Christmas Carol" features an elegant bonded-leather binding, distinctive gilt edging, and decorative endpapers. It's the perfect gift for the Christmas season, and any other season."
