This volume presents selected contributions from experts gathered at Chapman University for a conference held in November 2019 on new directions in function theory. The papers, written by leading researchers in the field, relate to hypercomplex analysis, Schur analysis and de Branges spaces, new aspects of classical function theory, and infinite dimensional analysis. Signal processing constitutes a strong presence in several of the papers.A second volume in this series of conferences, this book will appeal to mathematicians interested in learning about new fields of development in function theory.

Over the course of his distinguished career, Robert Strichartz (1943-2021) had a substantial impact on the field of analysis with his deep, original results in classical harmonic, functional, and spectral analysis, and in the newly developed analysis on fractals. This is the first volume of a tribute to his work and legacy, featuring chapters that reflect his mathematical interests, written by his colleagues and friends. An introductory chapter summarizes his broad and varied mathematical work and highlights his profound contributions as a mathematical mentor. The remaining articles are grouped into three sections – functional and harmonic analysis on Euclidean spaces, analysis on manifolds, and analysis on fractals – and explore Strichartz’ contributions to these areas, as well as some of the latest developments.

This book presents a functional calculus for n-tuples of not necessarily commuting linear operators. In particular, a functional calculus for quaternionic linear operators is developed. These calculi are based on a new theory of hyperholomorphicity for functions with values in a Clifford algebra: the so-called slice monogenic functions which are carefully described in the book. In the case of functions with values in the algebra of quaternions these functions are named slice regular functions. Except for the appendix and the introduction all results are new and appear for the first time organized in a monograph. The material has been carefully prepared to be as self-contained as possible. The intended audience consists of researchers, graduate and postgraduate students interested in operator theory, spectral theory, hypercomplex analysis, and mathematical physics.

In this book the authors develop a theory of free noncommutative functions, in both algebraic and analytic settings. Such functions are defined as mappings from square matrices of all sizes over a module (in particular, a vector space) to square matrices over another module, which respect the size, direct sums, and similarities of matrices. Examples include, but are not limited to, noncommutative polynomials, power series, and rational expressions. Motivation and inspiration for using the theory of free noncommutative functions often comes from free probability. An important application area is "dimensionless" matrix inequalities; these arise, e.g., in various optimization problems of system engineering. Among other related areas are those of polynomial identities in rings, formal languages and finite automata, quasideterminants, noncommutative symmetric functions, operator spaces and operator algebras, and quantum control.
