Passenger vehicles are central to Western society, and contribute to a signi?cant part of our greenhouse gas emissions. In order to reduce emissions, the automotive industry as a whole is working to reduce mass in passenger vehicles in order to reduce energy consumption. One way to reduce mass is to introduce lightweight materials in the body of the vehicle. This research aims to explore the relationship between product and production system when introducing new materials. Besides a theoretical review and an industry-centered technological mapping, four case studies have been conducted during the course of this licentiate thesis. Two case studies were conducted with engineering design students working as development teams, one case study with the author as the developer and ?nally one case study in an industrial environment at a product owning company with in-house production. The goal of the case studies has been to increase the collective knowledge of how product development decisions affect production development decisions, and vice versa, when developing passenger vehicles in new materials. In the following analysis of case study outcomes, a number of factors important for introducing new materials are discussed. The relationship between product and production is investigated, both in terms of how the production system affects the product and how the product affects the production system. The outcome from this analysis is a mapping of important factors for automotive industry companies to understand and identify when looking at introducing new materials in existing production systems. Finally, a suggestion for future research efforts is presented.

New Materials and Devices for 5G Applications and Beyond focuses on the materials, device architectures and enabling integration schemes for 5G applications and emerging technologies. It gives a comprehensive overview of the trade-offs, challenges and unique properties of novel upcoming technologies. Starting from the application side and its requirements, the book examines different technologies under consideration for the different functions, both more conventional to exploratory, and within this context the book provides guidance to the reader on how to possibly optimize the system for a particular application. This book aims at guiding the reader through the technologies required to enable 5G applications, with the main focus on mm-wave frequencies, up to THz. New Materials and Devises for 5G Applications and Beyond is suitable for industrial researchers and development engineers, and researchers in materials science, device engineering and circuit design. Reviews challenges and emerging opportunities for materials, devices, and integration to enable 5G technologies Includes discussion of technologies such as RF-MEMs, RF FINFETs, and transistors based on current and emerging materials (InP, GaN, etc.) Focuses on mm-wave frequencies up to the terahertz regime

This book discusses the expertise, skills, and techniques needed for the development of new materials and technologies. It focuses on finite element and finite volume methods that are used for engineering simulations, and present many state-of-the-art applications and advances to highlight these methods’ importance. For example, modern joining technologies can be used to fabricate new compound or composite materials, even those formed from dissimilar component materials. These composite materials are often exposed to harsh environments, must deliver specific characteristics, and are primarily used in automotive and marine technologies, i.e., ships, amphibious vehicles, docks, offshore structures, and even robots. To achieve the desired material performance, computer-based engineering tools are widely used for simulation, data evaluation, and design processes.

The integration of science with art is a complex process of analysis and the knowledge and understanding of the need to save and protect works of art as well as preserve and restore cultural heritage. This is generally provoked by the living necessity, profoundly human, to leave our inheritance to new generations, as intact as is possible, the testimonies of the past. The issues approached interfere with artistic criticism, for example, biological and physico-chemical analyses, and intelligent mathematical modeling systems such as Marker-less Augmented Reality, 3D Reconstruction, intelligent combinations of digital image analysis functions to recognize and estimate the possible evolution of color and shape to help experts make the best decisions about authenticating and preserving-restoring art objects.Advanced technical devices such as digital databases and other tools and materials can allow for the eradication of offenses such as false art and falsification.

Thermoelectric devices could play an important role in making efficient use of our energy resources but their efficiency would need to be increased for their wide scale application. There is a multidisciplinary search for materials with an enhanced thermoelectric responses for use in such devices. This volume covers the latest ideas and developments in this research field, covering topics ranging from the fabrication and characterization of new materials, particularly those with strong electron correlation, use of nanostructured, layered materials and composites, through to theoretical work to gain a deeper understanding of thermoelectric behavior. It should be a useful guide and stimulus to all working in this very topical field.
