Oh No Said Elephant

All the animals want to play hide-and-seek, but– “oh, no!” –Elephant isn't very good at that. He's too easy to find. What about leap-frog? He's not good at that, either. What about hopscotch, or skipping, or tag? No, no and no. Poor Elephant isn't very good at many games, and the animals are starting to get frustrated with him. Luckily there is one game Elephant loves to play, and the animals oblige him, though they may have to say "oh, no!" themselves when he wants to play it again. This rollicking, silly, repetitive text will have young readers laughing out loud and asking to read it again.

The animals are panicking - if the elephant sneezes he will blow the monkeys out of the trees, the feathers off the birds and the stripes off the zebras. A move intervenes to stop such catastrophe, but the animals learn to their cost that an elephant's laugh can be as dangerous as his sneeze.

Originally published in 1969, this book is a translation of Frank Edgar's Hausa folk stories, which was made primarily in Sokoto Province at the direction of Major John Alder, who in 1910 gave Edgar some Hausa texts written in the Ajemic script for transliteration into Roman characters. Edgar prepared the the first volme of the Tatsuniyoyi for publication in 1911. The Hausa whose folklore Edgar recorded so industriously are the largest ethnic group in Northern Nigeria and number many millions and these tales of past events show how Hausa conceive the histories of their states, the characters of their rulers, and their institutions of government and law. These traditions are thus equally important as documents of folk thought and as historical sources.

The elephant emerged from the water, a moving wall of gray cut against a startling blue sky. Wild high grasses brushed the columns of her huge legs as she dwarfed the hill that rose behind her. Massive footprints left pools of river water where she emerged from the pond that had slaked her thirst and provided her family an afternoon of muddy play. As a young man, Harcourt "Harky" Klinefelter became involved in the US's civil rights movement of the 1960s.
