Leur charme réside dans le fait qu'ils combinent deux procédures différentes : le pliage et l'assemblage. Les origamis modulaires se créent en effet en insérant l'une dans l'autre plusieurs parties réalisées à partir de feuilles pliées individuellement, généralement sans recourir au moindre adhésif. Jouer avec les couleurs des feuilles permet d'obtenir des résultats particulièrement réussis.
