This book details the responsibilities and activities of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Chapters range from conflict prevention and crisis management via the promotion of democracy and human rights to arms control – with each chapter including analysis and reports on political and diplomatic practice.

The OSCE Yearbook 2009 contains contributions written by leading European security experts on such topics as: the possibility that Europe needs a "new security architecture," the future of detente, Russian President Medvedev's initiative for a European Security Treaty, the Corfu Process, and the implications of US foreign policy in the post-Bush era for Europe. The participating States that take focus this year are Ukraine, Lithuania, and Belarus, together with past and future Chairmanship-holders Finland and Kazakhstan. The OSCE conflict prevention and dispute settlement activities that are examined include the prospects for conflict resolution in Moldova, the role of the mission in Kosovo, the military aspects of the OSCE mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the OSCE Center in Astana, and the prospects for conflict settlement in Nagorno-Karabakh. The contributions also include an in-depth consideration of the OSCE's election observation activities and an informed legal discussion of de facto regimes and human rights. As well, the book discusses the problems facing human rights defenders, the contradictions in international police reform, the OSCE's approach to border security and management, and the legacy of Professor Victor Yves Ghebali, who died this year.

This book explores how norms-based international organizations, namely the Council of Europe and the OSCE, are still able to win in world politics. Fawn uses the concept of internal conditionality to explain how these organizations have been able to respond to members with a lack of material incentives or instruments of coercion.

The ICJ ́s Opinion on Kosovo of 22 July 2010 has touched upon many pivotal questions of international law. This book contains a comprehensive stock-taking on this subject written by several international law experts from different European countries. Das IGH-Gutachten zum Kosovo vom 22. Dieser Band enthält eine grundlegende Bestandsaufnahme zu dieser Thematik mit Beiträgen einer Reihe von Autoren aus verschiedenen europäischen Staaten.

The ICJ Opinion on Kosovo was much awaited both in politics and in academic literature as it was expected to contain not only a decisive verdict on a long-lasting controversy on the Balkans but also a ground-breaking stock-taking on many pivotal questions of international law. The Opinion handed down by the ICJ on 22 July 2010 immediately gave rise to intense discussions that made broad reference to issues such as self-determination, secession, state sovereignty, state recognition and the constitutionalization of the international law order. Based on one of the first major international conferences on this subject, this book contains contributions by the international law experts who gathered at the University of Innsbruck (Austria) to discuss this subject.
