Excerpt from The Passing of War: A Study in Things That Make for Peace Chapter XIII, Wars of Defence and Liberation, is a concession to the curiously prevalent opinion that the abstract goodness of war may be validly argued from exceptional cases. These were previously excluded because such conflicts (as for instance the Balkan revolt) lie Outside the category of war in its fundamental and initial aspect which is the chief concern of civilisation and the subject proper to this book. Chapter XIV, War and Character, contains several sentences which had place in the book from the first. These bear witness against one or two critics who charged me with total neglect of the militarist contention that the passing of war would involve national decadence. War is dangerous for children and other living things. That 1960s antinuke cry is echoed here, in the past, in this 1921 classic of pacifistic philosophy. A sequel to the author's work The Great Illusion, this little-known but essential volume examines the psychological impulse to war and the economic futility of military power. Writing in the period between the world wars, the author discusses: . the old economy and the postwar state . nationality, economics, and the assertion of right . military predominance-and insecurity . patriotism and power in war and peace: the social outcome . and much more British journalist and politician SIR RALPH NORMAN ANGELL (1872-1967) was an executive for the World Committee against War and Fascism and a member of the executive committee of the League of Nations Union. First published in 1909, The Great Illusion sets out to answer one of the greatest questions in human history: Why is there war? Specifically, Angell wishes to discuss why there is war between the countries of Europe, which seem to always be at one another's throats. Angell refutes the belief that military power results in greater wealth and instead proposes that advanced economies based on trade and contract law can only generate value in the absence of military upset. War destroys any wealth that conquerors may have wanted to obtain, making the whole enterprise pointless. A deep understanding of this would, then, end the need for war. Students of history, political science, and peace studies will find much to ponder and much to argue with in this classic text.
