According to Paul Ormerod, author of the bestselling Butterfly Economics and Why Most Things Fail, the mechanistic viewpoint of conventional economics is drastically limited - because it cannot comprehend the vital nature of networks. As our societies become ever more dynamic and intertwined, network effects on every level are increasingly profound. 'Nudge theory' is popular, but only part of the answer. To grapple successfully with the current financial crisis, businesses and politicians need to grasp the perils and possibilities of Positive Linking. Our social and economic worlds have been revolutionised by a massive increase in our awareness of the choices, decisions, behaviours and opinions of other people. For the first time in human history, more than half of us live in cities, and this combined with the Internet has transformed communications. Network effects - the fact that a person can and often does decide to change his or her behaviour simply on the basis of copying what others do - pervade the modern world. As Ormerod shows, network effects make conventional approaches to policy, whether in the public or corporate sectors, much more likely to fail. But they open up the possibility of truly 'Positive Linking' - of more subtle, effective and successful policies, ones which harness our knowledge of network effects and how they work in practice.

This book presents the latest research advances in complex network structure analytics based on computational intelligence (CI) approaches, particularly evolutionary optimization. Most if not all network issues are actually optimization problems, which are mostly NP-hard and challenge conventional optimization techniques. To effectively and efficiently solve these hard optimization problems, CI based network structure analytics offer significant advantages over conventional network analytics techniques. Meanwhile, using CI techniques may facilitate smart decision making by providing multiple options to choose from, while conventional methods can only offer a decision maker a single suggestion. In addition, CI based network structure analytics can greatly facilitate network modeling and analysis. And employing CI techniques to resolve network issues is likely to inspire other fields of study such as recommender systems, system biology, etc., which will in turn expand CI’s scope and applications. As a comprehensive text, the book covers a range of key topics, including network community discovery, evolutionary optimization, network structure balance analytics, network robustness analytics, community-based personalized recommendation, influence maximization, and biological network alignment. Offering a rich blend of theory and practice, the book is suitable for students, researchers and practitioners interested in network analytics and computational intelligence, both as a textbook and as a reference work.

The globalization of marketing has brought about an interesting paradox: as the discipline becomes more global, the need to understand cultural differences becomes all the more crucial. This is the challenge in an increasingly international marketplace and a problem that the world's most powerful businesses must solve. From this challenge has grown the exciting discipline of ethnic marketing, which seeks to understand the considerable opportunities and challenges presented by cultural and ethnic diversity in the marketplace. To date, scholarship in the area has been lively but disparate. This volume brings together cutting-edge research on ethnic marketing from thought leaders across the world. Each chapter covers a key theme, reflecting the increasing diversity of the latest research, including models of culture change, parenting and socialization, responses to web and advertising, role of space and social innovation in ethnic marketing, ethnic consumer decision making, religiosity, differing attitudes to materialism, acculturation, targeting and ethical and public policy issues. The result is a solid framework and a comprehensive reference point for consumer researchers, students, and practitioners.

The 5th International Symposium on High Performance Computing (ISHPC–V) was held in Odaiba, Tokyo, Japan, October 20–22, 2003. The symposium was thoughtfully planned, organized, and supported by the ISHPC Organizing C- mittee and its collaborating organizations. The ISHPC-V program included two keynote speeches, several invited talks, two panel discussions, and technical sessions covering theoretical and applied research topics in high–performance computing and representing both academia and industry. One of the regular sessions highlighted the research results of the ITBL project (IT–based research laboratory, http://www.itbl.riken.go.jp/). ITBL is a Japanese national project started in 2001 with the objective of re- izing a virtual joint research environment using information technology. ITBL aims to connect 100 supercomputers located in main Japanese scienti?c research laboratories via high–speed networks. A total of 58 technical contributions from 11 countries were submitted to ISHPC-V. Each paper received at least three peer reviews. After a thorough evaluation process, the program committee selected 14 regular (12-page) papers for presentation at the symposium. In addition, several other papers with fav- able reviews were recommended for a poster session presentation. They are also included in the proceedings as short (8-page) papers. Theprogramcommitteegaveadistinguishedpaperawardandabeststudent paper award to two of the regular papers. The distinguished paper award was given for “Code and Data Transformations for Improving Shared Cache P- formance on SMT Processors” by Dimitrios S. Nikolopoulos. The best student paper award was given for “Improving Memory Latency Aware Fetch Policies for SMT Processors” by Francisco J. Cazorla.
