Postnational Perspectives On Contemporary Hispanic Literature

This collective volume addresses the current paradigm shift in the humanities (from national literatures toward crosscultural encounters) by exploring how postnational perspectives have an effect on Hispanic literature and literary theory in the "Global Now" (Appadurai), as crystallized within a new "world literature" written by Latin American, U.S., and Spanish writers. The contributing authors are scholars from the U.S., Latin America, and Europe, who have examined the impact of globalization on Hispanic literature within their respective fields.

Whether analyzing the increasingly popular character of the voluntary exile, the theme of masculinity in This Is How You Lose Her, or the multilingual nature of the Spanish language itself, they show how contemporary Hispanic writers and critics are engaging in cross-cultural literary conversations. Drawing from a range of fields including postcolonial, Latino, gender, exile, and transatlantic studies, these essays help characterize a new "world" literature that reflects changing understandings of memory, belonging, and identity.

Winner of the 2020-21 AHGBI-Spanish Embassy Publication Prize In March 1999, in an effort to stave off financial collapse, the Ecuadorian government suspended all banking operations and froze all bank accounts in the country for a period of five days. This episode, the Feriado Bancario, represents the peak of the worst financial crisis in the nation's history and one which had far-reaching and long-last effects on society, politics, the economy, and cultural production. The very idea of 'Ecuador' was transformed, as Ecuador became a country marked by constant interaction with the world beyond its borders. This book explores how contemporary Ecuadorian authors are reimagining the nation following the Feriado Bancario. Starting from a rereading of Ecuador's national novel, Jorge Icaza's Huasipungo (1930), which saw the nation as rooted in the land, the book examines post-crisis fiction which offers an image of Ecuador as a transnational space. It posits that these novels - Eliécer Cárdenas' El oscuro final del Porvenir (2000), Leonardo Valencia's Kazbek (2008), Carlos Arcos' Memorias de Andrés Chiliquinga (2013), and Gabriela Alemán's Humo (2017) - both reflect and explain the new reality of Ecuador as a nation that can no longer be defined by its territory. At the same time, the book uses the Ecuadorian case to challenge the conceptualisation of Latin American literature as 'post-national' and to show how countries on the periphery of the global literary market can, from the very fact of their minoritarian position, enrich and better define World Literature.

Americanized Spanish Culture explores the intricate transcultural dialogue between Spain and the United States since the late 19th century. The term "Americanized" reflects the influence of American cultural traits, ideas, and tendencies on individuals, institutions, and creative works that have moved back and forth between Spain and the United States. Although it is often defined narrowly as the result of a process of cultural imperialism, colonization, assimilation, and erasure, this book uses the term more expansively to explore representations of the transcultural mixing of Spanish and American culture in which the American influence might seem dominant but may also be the one that is shaped. The chapters in this volume highlight the lives of fascinating individuals, ideologies, and artistry that represent important themes in this transnational relationship of dislocated empires. The contributors represent a wide array of perspectives and life experiences, giving breadth, depth, and realism to their observations and analysis. Intersectional Feminism in the Age of Transnationalism: Voices from the Margins explores the limitations of the transnationalist approach to feminism and questions the neoliberal emphasis on individual freedom and consumer choice as the central goals of feminist activism.
