This volume presents the reviewed and edited proceedings of an international conference on the various surface-modification technologies used mainly to improve the wear and corrosion resistance of metal parts.

This collection of papers is from the 1995 TMS Annual Meeting and Exhibition held in Las Vegas, Nevada, February 12-16, 1995. It discusses new developments in environmentally-benign coatings practice, processing and materials, particularly in the area of thin film materials. Materials covered include replacements for electrolytic chrome, organic coatings for corrosion inhibition, diamond-like materials, nitrides and carbides. An emphasis is placed on environmentally-sound processing, and on new developments in existing technologies, such as sol-gel thermal spray and sputter deposition.
