Debates on historical and contemporary racism have recently become the subject of increasing public interest. The Black Lives Matter movement as well as the Covid-19 pandemic have underlined the importance and urgent necessity of examining racism in society from a multidisciplinary angle. The many facets of racism in the past and present also challenge the way we deal with history ("historical culture") in a globalized world. Rather than focusing on the history of ideas and its discursive development, this volume will focus on the practices of actors. It examines how and which practices, especially practices of comparing, are constitutive in the construction of 'race' and manifestations of racism. This edited volume brings together interdisciplinary contributions from history, sociology, political science, American studies, literary studies, and media studies. An important focus lies on the social asymmetries created by racialization, including inequalities and violence. The chapters foreground historical and contemporary practices of racism and discuss their appearance in different epochs and locations.

This volume brings together cutting edge research, critical commentary and candid, personal accounts in a rich array of fresh perspectives on the dimensions of race and racism that have been prevalent in many societies (for instance, in education, other sectors of human resource development and mainstream versus minority life experiences). Contributions from countries and settings worldwide illustrate the diversity of experiences and situations regarding race that have existed in a given time period, and the complexity of injustice issues wherein race is one of many interrelated and entwined factors contributing to a situation in a given society. Sub-themes emerge in aspects such as language, religion, gender, age, culture, national origin and immigrant status, migration history, workforce demands and literature. Accounts of pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial historical contexts and the accompanying shifts in attitudes and policies toward racial groups, ethnic minority groups, indigenous peoples and other subaltern groups offer readers a view on significant changes in the world regarding diversity and identity issues. These matters are rooted in policy and practices of daily life in the context of globalisation and in comparative perspective across countries. Insider perspectives, personal accounts and author testimonies from inside countries add a valuable personal dimension. Furthermore, this collection brings together cases in a wide range of settings, both in developed countries of the north and in developing countries and post-colonial states of the south, and a spread of perspectives from established scholars as well as new emerging scholars. Collectively, the contributions also focus on efforts to transcend the legacies of racism and injustice, exploitation and exclusion. The different cases reveal universal issues and common threads, and also contextually shaped distinctive features within different countries. The result is a panorama of insights on race and related issues as well as prospects for building post-racial societies, ranging from the global level and the local level within countries to personal dimensions. This collection is distinctive in that all regions of the world are represented, and it includes stories from the corners of the world that are seldom highlighted. This volume is a valuable resource illustrating historical and contemporary research along with thoughts on race and racism issues. While the interdisciplinary fields of Comparative and International Education and Post-Colonial Studies are the primary scholarly areas of focus, because of the interdisciplinary nature of the content, it will interest scholars and readers in a wide spectrum of fields including education, history, political science and policy studies, comparative literature, sociology, culture studies, literature, art, social work, development studies, global studies, third world studies and diversity and multiculturalism studies.

In the new arena for anti-racist work in which we find ourselves, the neo-liberal, ‘post-race’ university, this interdisciplinary collection demonstrates common global political concerns about racism in Higher Education. It highlights a range of issues regarding students, academic staff and knowledge systems, and all of the contributions seek to challenge the complacency of the ‘post-race’ present that is dominant in North-West Europe and North America, Brazil’s mythical ‘racial democracy’ and South Africa’s post-apartheid ‘rainbow nation’. The collection makes clear that we are not yet past the need for anti-racist institutional action because of the continuing impact of coloniality on and in these nations. From within the colonial psyche which still exists in the 21st century these nations actively deracinate politics, subjectivities, political economy and affective relationalities when they re-imagine themselves to be ‘post-race’ states where all citizens can have a share in the good life because now only class matters. Universities have also taken on the mantle of upholding societal ‘post-race’ status through ineffective equality and diversity policies and strategies. The collection makes the case for the urgent need to decolonize the university in ‘post-race’, neoliberal times through a focus on institutional racism in HEIs in Canada, Brazil, South Africa, the UK and the USA. As such it addresses institutional whiteness; the transformation of organizational cultures; the presence and experiences of Black people, People of Colour and Indigenous people in HEIs; the development of curriculum interventions; widening participation and organizational change; and future directions for racial equality and diversity in a ‘post-race’ era. This book was originally published as a special issue of Race Ethnicity and Education.

Critical Whiteness Studies have been established in the English speaking academic world as early as the 1980s. Instead of focusing on the racialized Other Critical Whiteness Studies reflect upon the racializing practices of the white subject. The `translation' of this figure of thought into the German/European context is just beginning. The anthology Weiss - Weisssein - Whiteness presents recent research on the relevance of Whiteness at the intersection of race and gender. The authors work within the German context as well as in international contexts and they deal with the subject of Whiteness from different disciplinary as well as interdisciplinary perspectives.
