Poznan, Poland was selected as the site of the third annual workshop on this topic to coincide with the Software Engineering Education Symposium (SEES'98), and also to establish an international presence in Central Europe "although we are not an event on the scale of olympic games." Twenty-six participants (pictured) present papers related to: real-time systems programs and curricula, teaching RT systems design and verification, components of RT labs, RT systems in control engineering education and in other disciplines. Also includes invited talks on RT devices at practical prices and the essentials of RT education. For the uninitiated, IEEE stands for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. There's something really satisfying about turning theory into practice, bringing with it a great feeling of accomplishment. Moreover it usually deepens and solidifies your understanding of the theoretical aspects of the subject, while at the same time eliminating misconceptions and misunderstandings. So it's not surprising that the the fundamental philosophy of this book is that 'theory is best understood by putting it into practice'. Well, that's fine as it stands. Unfortunately the practice may a bit more challenging, especially in the field of real-time operating systems. First, you need a sensible, practical toolset on which to carry out the work. Second, for many self-learners, cost is an issue; the tools mustn't be expensive. Third, they mustn't be difficult to get, use and maintain. So what we have here is our approach to providing you with a low cost toolset for RTOS experimentation. The toolset used for this work consists of: A graphical tool for configuring microcontrollers (specifically STM32F variants) - STM32CubeMX software application. An Integrated Development Environment for the production of machine code.A very low cost single board computer with inbuilt programmer and debuggerAll software, which is free, can be run on Windows, OSX or Linux platforms. The Discovery kit is readily available from many electronic suppliers. The RTOS used for this work is FreeRTOS, which is integrated with the CubeMX tool. The author: Jim Cooling has had many years experience in the area of real-time embedded systems, including electronic, software and system design, project management, consultancy, education and course development. He has published extensively on the subject, his books covering many aspects of embedded-systems work such as real-time interfacing, programming, software design and software engineering. Currently he is a partner in Lindentree Associates (which he formed in 1998), providing consultancy and training for real-time embedded systems.See: www.lindentreeuk.co.uk

This updated edition offers an indispensable exposition on real-time computing, with particular emphasis on predictable scheduling algorithms. It introduces the fundamental concepts of real-time computing, demonstrates the most significant results in the field, and provides the essential methodologies for designing predictable computing systems used to support time-critical control applications. Along with an in-depth guide to the available approaches for the implementation and analysis of real-time applications, this revised edition contains a close examination of recent developments in real-time systems, including limited preemptive scheduling, resource reservation techniques, overload handling algorithms, and adaptive scheduling techniques. This volume serves as a fundamental advanced-level textbook. Each chapter provides basic concepts, which are followed by algorithms, illustrated with concrete examples, figures and tables. Exercises and solutions are provided to enhance self-study, making this an excellent reference for those interested in real-time computing for designing and/or developing predictable control applications.

In the first two volumes of Structured Development for Real Time Systems, authors Paul Ward and Stephen Mellor described a comprehensive modeling notation and a set of guidelines for using the notation to build an essential model. In this final volume, the guidelines are extended to encompass the building of an implementation model, and the notation is extended to include a hierarchical description of code organization.
