This book analyses collaborative activities across the visual arts to show the power of non-verbal rhetoric in the Middle Ages.

Beyond Words is a highly visual, thematically-organized reader intended for use in introductory composition courses. Including over 200 color images in a wide variety of media and genres and over 70 readings, Beyond Words offers strategies for reading and responding to texts - verbal and visual texts - and practice in informative, analytical, and persuasive writing.

This project also introduces the term Philomela Syndrome signifying those peoples who have been physically or metaphorically silenced by a dominant group in society, utilizing the terms feminized and masculinized to denote disempowered and empowered groups. Further, this text establishes Reclamation Theory as the process by which a marginalized group discards an outward demarcation of difference to promote equality and later may reclaim it when a modicum of equality is established so as to celebrate diversity.

This is a book on "medieval literature" that foregrounds language as the agent for cultivating medieval friendship (from the first century BC to c. 1160 AD) in oratorical, ecclesiastical, monastic, and erotic contexts.
