This accessible new textbook offers a detailed overview of the key concepts and current issues in international security studies. We are all interested in "security". We search for it, we constantly pursue it, we deny it to others, and when we achieve it for ourselves, we relish it. Undoubtedly, feeling secure and well protected is one of humankind's most cherished goals. Our incessant search for security, however, remains one the most fiercely debated topics and to this day we remain unconvinced of the best way to achieve what is, for many, an elusive commodity. This is compounded by a number of problems facing thinkers in the field. As a concept, "security" refers simply to the safety or protection of some entity. The first problem, therefore, is that confusion reigns over whether it is the state, individual or some other unit that ought to be prioritized and made secure. To use the correct jargon, what should the "referent object" be. The debate rages primarily between those who advocate the "state" and those who argue that the basic unit has to be the individual, but that is not the end of it since the second, related, problem, is the nature of the threats that face us. Again the academic world is divided between a variety opinions, with a significant number insisting that military force is central to world politics and that the primary actors are states. However, an increasingly influential viewpoint is that the focus on states and military force is far too narrow and does not consider a wider range of threats that both states and the individual have to face. Finally, these problems are further compounded by what is perhaps the most important issue - defining the concept of "security". As the opening chapters of this book demonstrate, this problem remains central to the field of Security Studies and we are nowhere near resolving it. One way to manoeuvre safely within this minefield is to look at the possible definitions found in the various theoretical traditions. The many definitions of "security" are largely dependent upon which theory is acting as a lens at that particular point. This does help us, but only on a superficial level, since the rich array of perspectives available to us demonstrate that the concept is far from simple. Indeed, its multi-dimensional nature causes great confusion amongst those approaching the field for the very first time. Nevertheless, Security Studies is now a well-established discipline with a rich array of traditions each of which has something to say about the concept of security, the referent object and the nature of threats facing us. This textbook will be essential reading for students of international security, critical security, human security and war and conflict studies.

This textbook introduces students to the sub-field of critical security studies through a detailed yet accessible survey of emerging theories and practices. This third edition contains two new chapters – on ‘Ontological security’ and ‘(In)Security and the everyday’ – and has been fully revised and updated. Written in an accessible and clear manner, Critical Security Studies: offers a comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to critical security studies locates critical security studies within the broader context of social and political theory evaluates fundamental theoretical positions in critical security studies against a backdrop of new security challenges. The book is divided into two main parts. Part I, ‘Approaches’, surveys the newly extended and contested theoretical terrain of critical security studies: constructivist theories, Critical Theory, feminist and gender approaches, postcolonial perspectives, poststructuralism and International Political Sociology, Ontological security, and securitisation theory. Part II, ‘Issues’, examines how these various theoretical approaches have been put to work in critical considerations of environmental and planetary security; health, human security and development; information, technology and warfare; migration and border security; (in)security and the everyday; and terror, risk and resilience. The historical and geographical scope of the book is deliberately broad and each of the chapters in Part II concretely illustrates one or more of the approaches discussed in Part I, with clear internal referencing allowing the text to act as a holistic learning tool for students. How will the travel and tourism industry respond to the terrorist attacks on America? The recent terrorist attacks in the United States and their repercussions for the travel and leisure industries have focused more attention on tourism safety and security issues than ever before. The impact on tourism destinations and businesses, as well as on traveler behavior, will be significant. Recent events require further analysis not only of how travel safety may be improved but also how security issues may be seen in terms of tourism marketing and management so that the industry is able to better respond to such challenges. In this, an era of turbulent global relationships, the need for destination marketing organizations to demonstrate that they are safe for tourists has become increasingly important. Negative publicity, often unrelated to on-the-ground reality, may also serve to affect tourist perceptions. Safety and Security in Tourism: Relationships, Management, and Marketing examines: the effects of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the tourism industry and how the industry is responding the importance of safety as a factor in destination or activity choice case studies of destination and business responses to past political instability and/or attacks against tourists safety, security and destination image the role of the media in influencing consumer perceptions of travel safety consumer awareness of travel advisories and their influence on behavior the role of insurance in the travel industry consumer awareness and acceptance of security measures in travel and tourism safety and security as a component in destination marketing crisis and risk management in the tourism industry cross-border security and visa controls and their implications for tourism safety and security measures for tourists in different sectors and in airports Tourism has often been cited as a force for peace, yet tourism is typically one of the first industrial casualties of war and political unrest. This book examines tourism safety and security issues to give you a better knowledge base from which to respond to future events.

This is an accessible new examination of what ‘security’ means today, contextualizing the term amongst other key ideas, such as the nation state, diplomacy, war and autonomy. By exploring the many differing conceptions of security, this study clearly explains how the idea of security in world affairs can be understood in relation to other ideas and points of view. It shows how, when standing alone, the word ‘security’ is meaningless, or just an empty term, when divorced from other ideas distinctive to international life. This essential new volume tackles the key questions in the debate: what norms of sovereignty relate to security? does security necessarily follow from the recognition of identity? what sort of obligations in respect of security attach to power? how far can a political arrangement of empire remedy human insecurity? can trusteeship provide security in a world of legally equal sovereign states? is security the guarantor of freedom? This book is an excellent resource for students and scholars of security studies and politics and international relations.
