The outlook for women with breast cancer has improved in recent years. Due to the combination of improved treatments and the benefits of mammography screening, breast cancer mortality has decreased steadily since 1989. Yet breast cancer remains a major problem, second only to lung cancer as a leading cause of death from cancer for women. To date, no means to prevent breast cancer has been discovered and experience has shown that treatments are most effective when a cancer is detected early, before it has spread to other tissues. These two facts suggest that the most effective way to continue reducing the death toll from breast cancer is improved early detection and diagnosis. Building on the 2001 report Mammography and Beyond, this new book not only examines ways to improve implementation and use of new and current breast cancer detection technologies but also evaluates the need to develop tools that identify women who would benefit most from early detection screening. Saving Women's Lives: Strategies for Improving Breast Cancer Detection and Diagnosis encourages more research that integrates the development, validation, and analysis of the types of technologies in clinical practice that promote improved risk identification techniques. In this way, methods and technologies that improve detection and diagnosis can be more effectively developed and implemented.

The single greatest health risk for women today-more than stroke and all cancers "combined-is heart disease. Yet despite this documented fact, heart disease is still considered primarily a "male problem," with the result that far too many women go untreated by doctors and are misinformed by the existing literature. Now, with this groundbreaking new book, Dr. Nieca Goldberg, the nation's leading expert on women's heart disease, has at last remedied this situation. "Women "Are Not Small Men presents detailed, decade-by-decade programs that give women at any age OF life the facts and the guidance they need to recognize, treat, and prevent heart disease. In the course of her work as founder and chief of the Women's Heart Program at New York's Lenox Hill Hospital, Dr. Goldberg has come to a startling realization: Women experience heart disease in a fundamentally different way than men do. The physiology of a woman's heart attack is not the same as a man's, the symptoms of heart disease and signs of impending heart attack differ for women, and once heart disease has been recognized, women often do not get the treatment and medications they need. In this accessible book, she uses these critical insights to build a complete treatment and prevention program geared to the unique needs of women. Engagingly written and grounded in compelling true patient stories, the book presents comprehensive instructions on what you can do to maintain or improve your heart health, including how to spot the warning signs of heart disease, the exercises and diet to follow for prevention and recovery, how to assess risk factors, techniques for reducing stress, the truth about estrogen and hormonereplacement therapy, which supplements and herbal remedies really work, and how to become your own advocate in dealing with the medical profession. Dr. Nieca Goldberg has made it her mission to give women the treatment and information they deserve. Now she makes her research, prevention program, and recovery strategies accessible to all women. Authoritative, caring, and up-to-the-minute, this is destined to become the women's health book of the new millennium.

A preacher marries a prostitute to save her from human traffickers—or so he tells himself. * * * Sarah Rahab Sutton hides a secret life from her religious parents. While they’re out evangelizing, she’s hooking up for cash and worshipping a faceless man who meets her in an abandoned outhouse. Pastor Josh McKay lost his young son and wife to a hit-and-run accident. He drives a truck on the same route on the lookout for the deadly driver. Instead, he finds Sarah hitchhiking. He’s instantly attracted to her angelic looks but put off by her unsavory conversation. When God puts her in his path and he rescues her from a brothel, the temptation is too hot to handle. He thinks marrying her will solve his problems; however, they’ve only just begun. Sarah wants unconditional love and she fantasizes that the baby she’s carrying will heal Josh’s heart. Meanwhile, Josh is wondering if he made a big mistake. When Sarah disappears one morning, Josh goes to his friends to mount a rescue. They’re up against more powerful forces than they realize: betrayal, lies, murder, and a wily and well-placed enemy. Both Josh and Sarah must walk by faith to save their hearts, defeat the criminals, and prove to themselves that true love can rise from the ashes of sin and despair.

Throughout the Cold War, Soviet citizens had limited access to US life and culture. Amerika, a glossy Russian-language magazine similar to Life, provided a rare exception. Produced by the United States Information Agency (USIA), America’s first peacetime propaganda organization, Amerika was used to influence the Soviet public and convince women in particular that an American-style consumer culture and conservative gender norms could better their lives. Winning Women’s Hearts and Minds relies on USIA archives, issues of Amerika, and American women’s magazines such as the Ladies’ Home Journal to show how, during the postwar period, USIA officials deployed idealized images of American women as happy, fulfilled, and feminine wives, mothers, and homemakers. This study analyses how Amerika was used to appeal to Sovietwomen. Portrayed in the US media as "babushkas," they were considered unfeminine, overworked, and deprived of consumer goods and services by a repressive regime. Diana Cucuz provides a gendered analysis of the USIA and of Amerika, whose propaganda campaign relied heavily on postwar conservative gender norms and images of domestic contentment to convey positive messages about the American way of life in the hopes of undermining the Soviet regime. Winning Women’s Hearts and Minds sheds light on the significance of women, gender, and consumption to international politics during the Cold War.
