Marine ecosystems are very productive and include the open ocean, the deep-sea ocean, and coastal marine ecosystems, each of which has different physical and biological characteristics. The biodiversity of some of these ecosystems is very rich and abundant, offering unique opportunities for high-yield production of proteinaceous material, which is a source of high-quality foods. Biodiversity is fundamental to sustaining marine ecosystem services, such as food security, maintenance of water quality, and recovery from perturbations, which are currently being threatened worldwide. The main threats to marine biodiversity are habitat loss, eutrophication, overexploitation, pollution by hazardous substances, introduction of non-native species, and other human activities. Efforts to reduce these pressures are essential for coastal water quality, recovery of ecosystem services, global food security, and ecosystem stability. Bioindicators are important tools to be used as early warning signals to detect the presence of natural and chemical stressors when monitoring and managing ecosystems and thus promoting ecosystem health. The protection of biodiversity is a major target of the European Union Marine Strategy Framework Directive, requiring an assessment of the status of biodiversity on the level of species, habitats, and ecosystems, including genetic diversity and the role of biodiversity in food web structure and functioning. The restoration of marine ecosystems can support the productivity and reliability of goods and services that the ocean provides to humankind to maintain ecosystem integrity and stability. Some of the goods produced by the marine ecosystem services are fish harvests, wild plant and animal resources, water, and services that provide recreation, tourism, breeding and nursery habitats, water transport, carbon sequestration, erosion control, and habitat provision. This book comprises six chapters that discuss the ecological, economic, and social roles of a variety of organisms, from primary producers to consumers, relating these roles with water quality and conservation of estuarine and marine ecosystems and thus the contribution to human health.

The deep sea covers over 60% of the surface of the earth, yet less than 1% has been scientifically investigated. There is growing pressure on deep-sea resources and on researchers to deliver information on biodiversity and the effects of human impacts on deep-sea ecosystems. Although scientific knowledge has increased rapidly in recent decades, there exist large gaps in global sampling coverage of the deep sea, and major efforts continue to be directed into offshore research. Biological Sampling in the Deep Sea represents the first comprehensive compilation of deep-sea sampling methodologies for a range of habitats. It reviews the real life applications of current, and in some instances developing, deep-sea sampling tools and techniques. In creating this book the authors have been able to draw upon the experiences of those at the coal face of deep-sea sampling, expanding on the existing methodological texts whilst encompassing a level of technical detail often omitted from journal publications. Ultimately the book will promote international consistency in sampling approaches and data collection, advance the integration of information into global databases, and facilitate improved data analyses and consequently uptake of science results for the management and conservation of the deep-sea environment. Sue is very outspoken while David is a quiet follower of the others. Rex is the driving force, he leads the children of Jersey and is very brave, enjoying dangerous confrontations with the Germans. Marianne is the good girl of the school and very much a loner, she always obeys the teachers and the Germans and Rex finds himself having to act as her protector from the other children when they begin to view her as a traitor. One night Rex finds out that Marianne is hiding a family of Jews in the hills and brings in the other two to help her. To their astonishment, the girl who spends her nights working in her father’s hotel: Dancing With The Enemy, is her own one-woman resistance group, receiving orders from Britain. Sue is wildly jealous of Marianne’s growing relationship with Rex but is forced to subdue it when they join forces. Rex’s group, who, up till then, had merely crept around painting Victory Vs everywhere, now find themselves involved in a much more dangerous business: Smuggling fugitives, disarming mines and spying. Marianne saves Sue when she falls into a Gestapo trap, then she and Rex are trapped themselves and Rex saves Marianne’s life and in the process learns she is herself a Jewess and has spent some time in a concentration camp. Marianne gradually shows them how to fight the Germans and Rex begins to understand the commitment needed: When he asks her if she sleeps with the Germans, she tells him no but she will if it becomes necessary! A high-ranking American officer crash lands on the island and the children have to hide him. the Germans take hostages, amongst them Rex and David, and promise to shoot them if the officer is not handed over. The novel is full of action and emotion, but the story is about the realities of war: The sacrifices that have to be made. But it is not a sad book, it is full of the humour that dangerous situations bring and the accelerated relationships that take place in time of war. The book ends on an upbeat note, leaving the way clear for a series of follow up novels.
