Identifies low density lipoproteins as the primary target of cholesterol-lowering therapy and emphasizes the role of clinical approach in primary prevention of coronary heart disease. Reports that dietary therapy remains the first line of treatment of high blood cholesterol and that drug therapy is reserved for patients considered to be at high risk for coronary heart disease. Features of this report that distinguish it from the first report are: increased emphasis on CHD risk status as a guide to type and intensity of cholesterol-lowering therapy; more attention to high density lipoprotein as a CHD risk factor; and increased emphasis on physical activity and weight loss as components of the dietary therapy of high blood cholesterol.

Presents the National Cholesterol Education Program's updated recommendations for cholesterol management with examination of available evidence on coronary heart disease (CHD) and high blood cholesterol.
