Sensors For Domestic Applications

This book contains 20 papers devoted to the domestic use of sensors. This up-to-date review fills a gap in the literature arising from the recent intense research and development of these sensors and takes an interdisciplinary approach to the operation principles of sensors and the preparation techniques, with particular regard to microelectronics techniques which allow the realization of sensor systems with integrated electronic circuitry.The applications of sensors in the domestic environment are accurately reviewed and the trends of future sensor development are also outlined.

Taken as a whole, this series covers all major fields of application for commercial sensors, as well as their manufacturing techniques and major types. As such the series does not treat bulk sensors, but rather places strong emphasis on microsensors, microsystems and integrated electronic sensor packages. Each of the individual volumes is tailored to the needs and queries of readers from the relevant branch of industry. A competent and comprehensive survey of current and future sensors applied in electronic household devices. Engineers and scientists will find here reports of an increase in product safety, efficiency and consumer comfort, coupled with a decrease in power consumption and water/wastewater. The book also looks at the customer appeal of advanced "intelligent" appliances, showing the heightened need for comprehensive information on their potentials and limitations.

This Special Issue presents the recent advances in sensor technologies for smart homes, including fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors for detecting the presence and number of occupants, the Internet of things for monitoring CO2 concentration, and designing a novel eye-tracking system for monitoring and controlling a smart home, and infrared thermal sensors for fall detection. Such new explorations are pushing the boundary of sensing technologies and, thus, will have more profound implications for the future smart home. Advanced machine learning and data mining algorithms have been proposed to address sensor failure, appliance identification, and human activity recognition in a home environment. These results will enable a promising, sustainable deployment of sensing technologies. A novel multi-agent gamification system is proposed for managing tasks between household members and between families, which demonstrate another dimension of future smart home application. This Special Issue concludes with a review on sensors for human activity recognition. This work paves the roadmap for deploying smart home systems in different socioeconomic contexts. The whole Special Issue has significantly helped to shape our understanding of the strength, implications, and barriers of deploying long-term, sustainable, sensor technologies for smart homes.
