Sequences And Their Applications

Pseudorandom sequences have widespread applications, for instance, in spread spectrum, code division multiple access, optical and ultrawide band communication systems, as well as in ranging systems global positioning systems, circuit testing and stream ciphers. Such sequences also have strong ties to error-correcting codes. This volume contains survey and research papers on sequences and their applications. It brings together leading experts from discrete mathematics, computer science and communications engineering, and helps to bridge advances in these different areas. Papers in this volume discuss the theory of sequences and their applications in cryptography, coding theory, communications systems, numerical computation and computer simulation.

Each paper was reviewed by at least 2 referees (at least 3 when an author was a TPC member) and the TPC selected 33 papers to be presented at the conference. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the Third International Conference on Sequences and Their Applications, SETA 2004, held in Seoul, Korea in October 2004. The 30 revised full papers presented together with 4 invited survey articles were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement from initially 59 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on complexity of sequences, perfect sequences, sequence construction, sequences modulo z, sequence generator properties and applications, multi-dimensional sequences, optics and OFDM applications, and polynomials and functions.

This book gives a general view of sequence analysis, the statistical study of successions of states or events. It includes innovative contributions on life course studies, transitions into and out of employment, contemporaneous and historical careers, and political trajectories. The approach presented in this book is now central to the life-course perspective and the study of social processes more generally. This volume promotes the dialogue between approaches to sequence analysis that developed separately, within traditions contrasted in space and disciplines. It includes the latest developments in sequential concepts, coding, atypical datasets and time patterns, optimal matching and alternative algorithms, survey optimization, and visualization. Field studies include original sequential material related to parenting in 19th-century Belgium, higher education and work in Finland and Italy, family formation before and after German reunification, French Jews persecuted in occupied France, long-term trends in electoral participation, and regime democratization. Overall the book reassesses the classical uses of sequences and it promotes new ways of collecting, formatting, representing and processing them. The introduction provides basic sequential concepts and tools, as well as a history of the method. Chapters are presented in a way that is both accessible to the beginner and informative to the expert.
