Status Of Women Migrants

The Partition of India resulted in a massive exodus of men, women and children from both East and West Pakistan to India in 1947.Even after the emergence of East Pakistan as Bangladesh, an independent democratic nation in 1971, the flow of migrants to the eastern states of India, namely West Bengal, Orissa, Assam and Tripura was not stemmed. The women among them, not only came along with their families, but also singly. Very often forced to accept the burden of a new refugee life, they began their struggle for survival and existence, fraught more often than not, with difficulty and adverse circumstances .The challenge sometimes became so acute, that there was a metamorphic change in their behaviour, thinking and attitude. The status of the women migrants under such circumstances is uncertain and precarious. This book, the outcome of the doctoral thesis at Jadavpur University, Kolkata is an attempt to present a picture of the status of women migrants from Bangladesh who have settled in the two states of West Bengal and Orissa after 1971, specifically, between 1971-2001.The position these women in the wider fabric of India society and their status at home and workplace have been studied, based on a primary survey in selected areas of West Bengal and Orissa, namely Nadia and Murshidabad in West Bengal and Kendrapara in Orissa where there are large settlements of migrants from Bangladesh. It is sincerely hoped that this book will be useful to scholars and researchers in the fields of economics, demography and women studies.

The important role women play in the process of migration to the Western bloc — and in particular to Southern Europe where they often find jobs in the domestic service, tourist or sex industries — has been increasingly recognized. This open access book focuses on Albanian internal and international female migration and places gender at the heart of postsocialist transformation. It explores the vulnerabilities that arise for female citizens from the contradictory policies produced by the Albanian state. By illuminating the intersection of gender and migration, it shows how Albanian women are likely to embed themselves in complex social relations and migration trajectories. By focusing on various cases – internal, international, return, economic and student female migrants – the book underlines that migration does not follow any kind of evolutionary development, according to which women go from 'traditional’ to ‘modern' gender relations. By providing a compelling account on the complex negotiations and tactics women employ to deal with gender inequalities, this book leads to a better understanding of gender and migration entanglements. It is a useful read to students, academics in migration and gender studies as well as social scientists and policy-makers in European countries.

Approximately half of all migrants today are female. The contributors to this volume consider the ways in which attention to gender is moving debates away from old paradigms, such as the push/pull motivation which used to dominate the field of migration studies. The authors consider women's experience of migration, especially in long distance, transnational moves. They examine the extent to which labour migration is a social and strategic decision for women.

This book explores the dynamic interplay between cross-national and cross-cultural patterns of female migration, integration and social change, by focusing on the specific case of Belgium. It provides insight into the dynamic interplay between gender and migration, and especially contributes to the knowledge of how migration changes gender relations in Belgium, as well as in the regions of origin. To this end, an analytical model for conducting gender-sensitive migration research is developed out of an initial theory-driven conceptual model. Employing a transversal approach, the researchers reveal similarities and differences across national backgrounds, disclosing the underlying, more "universal" gender dynamics.
