This volume provides an in-depth account of Old English, organized by linguistic level. Individual chapters, written by recognized experts in the field, review the state of the art in phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic studies of Old English. Key areas of debate, including dialectology, language contact, standardization, and literary language, are also explored. The volume sets the scene with a chapter on pre-Old English and ends with a chapter discussing textual resources available for the study of earlier English.

This book comprises a series of studies by a number of scholars working on what might broadly be termed the “medieval” period of the history of English, focusing on Old English, Middle English, and the relatively less well-documented period of transition from the former to the latter. The volume brings together contributions not only from a variety of fields, ranging from semantics and syntax to prosody and phonology, but also from different theoretical standpoints, in order to improve the reader’s understanding of the rapid changes that affect the language at this time. The Volume contains written versions of some contributions to the Fifth International Conference on Middle English (ICOME 5), held at the University of Naples in 2005. Most of the papers concentrate on individual aspects of grammar and semantics, although some focus on dialectal fragmentation, and others adopt a pragmatic perspective. There is still a lot to be done in the study of the Middle English lexicon, in the same way as there are many aspects of grammar that have not been fully studied yet. The volume aims at providing contributions that can further the knowledge of these subfields of English historical linguistics, through state-of-the-art case studies that also exploit all modern resources such as computerised corpora and electronically tagged texts.
