Progressively, the well explored and studied mechanical properties of a bulk metal are compared with the corrosion behaviour obtained from its surface, which enables promising improvements in desired applications. An example is magnesium metal: where, by developing new types of surface modifications by understanding its inconsistent corrosion behaviour, it would be possible to apply this engineering metal safely as a biocompatible metal, in addition to its widely used application areas such as the automobile and aerospace industries. Accordingly, many scientists worldwide have focused their attention on new approaches either to fabricate anti-corrosive coatings or tailor the corrosion rate of magnesium for industrial and biomedical applications. This work covers different types of surface/bulk modification of magnesium or magnesium alloys with different surface pre-treatments, polymer coatings, nanostructuring and composite formation.

The development of biodegradable implants which can remain in the human body to fix a problem and subsequently dissolve, or be absorbed, consumed or excreted, without warranting a secondary surgery, is very appealing to scientists. Due to their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, magnesium implants provide a viable option many problems associated with permanent metallic implants such as, restenosis, thrombosis, permanent physical irritation, and inability to adapt to growth and changes in human body. Volume 2 of this important new book explores practical issues of magnesium and magnesium alloys, physical and mechanical modification and coatings to enhance this material for biomedical applications. Includes expert analysis on chemical solution deposition of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and octacalcium (OCP) phosphate coatings for magnesium Comprehensive coverage of biomimetic modifications, surface functionalization of biomolecules, natural, conducting and biodegradable polymeric coatings Lucid dissection of chemical, physical, mechanical and electromechanical modifications of magnesium and its alloys for biomedical applications

Magnesium is the lightest of all the metals and the sixth most abundant on Earth. Magnesium is ductile and the most machinable of all the metals. Magnesium alloy developments have traditionally been driven by requirements for lightweight materials to operate under increasingly demanding conditions (magnesium alloy castings, wrought products, powder metallurgy components, office equipment, nuclear applications, flares, sacrificial anodes for the protection of other metals, flash photography and tools). The biggest potential market for magnesium alloys is in the automotive industry. In recent years new magnesium alloys have demonstrated a superior corrosion resistance for aerospace and specialty applications. Considering the information above, special issues on magnesium alloys are exposed in this book: casting technology; surface modification of some special Mg alloys; protective carbon coatings on magnesium alloys; fatigue cracking behaviors of cast magnesium alloys and also, magnesium alloys biocompatibility as degradable implant materials.

Surface modification of magnesium and its alloys for biomedical applications: Biological interactions, mechanical properties and testing, the first of two volumes, is an essential guide on the use of magnesium as a degradable implant material. Due to their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, magnesium based degradable implants provide a viable option for the permanent metallic implants. This volume focuses on the fundamental concepts of surface modification of magnesium, its biological interactions, mechanical properties and, in vitro and in vivo testing. The contents of volume 1 is organized and presented in three parts. Part 1 reviews the fundamental aspects of surface modification of magnesium, including surface design, opportunities, challenges and its role in revolutionizing biodegradable biomaterials. Part 2 addresses the biological and mechanical properties covering an in vivo approach to the bioabsorbable behavior of magnesium alloys, mechanical integrity and, the effects of amino acids and proteins on the performance of surface modified magnesium. Part 3 delves in to testing and characterization, exploring the biocompatibility and effects on fatigue life alongside the primary characteristics of surface modified magnesium. All chapters are written by experts, this two volume series provides systematic and thorough coverage of all major modification technologies and coating types of magnesium and its alloys for biomedical applications. Expert analysis of the fundamentals in surface modification of magnesium and its alloys for biomedical applications Includes biological interactions and mechanical properties Focuses on testing and characterisation, as well as biocompatibility

A resistance of magnesium alloys to surface degradation is paramount for their applications in automotive, aerospace, consumer electronics and general-purpose markets. An emphasis of this book is on oxidation, corrosion and surface modifications, designed to enhance the alloy surface stability. It covers a nature of oxides grown at elevated temperatures and oxidation characteristics of selected alloys along with elements of general and electrochemical corrosion. Medical applications are considered that explore bio-compatibility of magnesium alloys. Also techniques of surface modifications, designed to improve not only corrosion resistance but also corrosion fatigue, wear and other behaviors, are described. The book represents a valuable resource for scientists and engineers from academia and industry.

Magnesium alloys have been attractive to designers due to their low density (two thirds that of aluminium), the sixth most abundant on earth, is ductile and the most machinable of all the metals. This has been a major factor in the widespread use of magnesium alloy castings and wrought products, powder metallurgy components, sacrificial anodes for the protection of other metals, tools. The present book, "New Features on Magnesium Alloys", gives us an overview in some special areas of magnesium alloys concerning technological applications and eco-friendly requirements. Each chapter brings us a new facet relating to the magnesium alloy application: magnesium alloys quasicrystals used to magnesium alloys reinforcement; rare earth metals as alloying components in magnesium implants for orthopaedic applications; magnesium alloys surface treatment by applying physical vapor deposition processes; casting magnesium alloys subjected to laser treatment; ductility enhancement on special magnesium alloys; welding and joining processing of magnesium alloys; transport application of magnesium and its alloys.
