Takeaway Heritage

This is the story of the hidden heritage of refugees and migrants working in restaurants, cafes and takeaways. Through life stories and candid photography, it tells the untold history of migration and the evolution of integration from the overlooked regions of the Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa. In the UK such humble establishments have been neglected by migration studies and overlooked by social historians, but they are they are unsung spaces of delicious food and of meaningful cultural interaction. The workers are stereotyped as unsophisticated but are often well educated and highly travelled, bringing with them culture, recipes and techniques from afar. Migrant heritage tells us something important about who we are as a multicultural society and how that society has been negotiated. In the UK there has been a long tradition of migrant integration through cuisine. This has been neglected by academic studies as too everyday but it contains a very telling fusion of international and local heritage. The main body of the book is a series of chapters each devoted to a different restaurant or takeaway. They allow the owners, managers, workers and customers to tell their stories through the story of their businesses. Each chapter is illustrated throughout with colourful photos of the restaurants and characterful portraits of the owners. At the end of the book is a series of essays exploring the deeper truths opened up in the interviews within the context of the wider social history.

How does it feel to be a castaway in the UK today? Our latest book is based on interviews with refugees and asylum seekers living in Brighton and East Sussex, and the people who work with those communities. It tells their stories, in their own words. The Castaway Heritage Project was made possible through the generosity of the Heritage Lottery Fund and the support of those involved.

The new book and documentary tell some of the stories behind the headlines and reveal the humanity of the individuals caught up in the asylum process. Based on interviews with refugees and migrants, their untold stories reveal the human stories beyond the clichés and stereotypes. Every day the news carries stories about asylum seekers crossing the channel or about new immigration policies, but we never hear from the people who are making the journeys themselves. This book and accompanying film bring their voices to the fore. The project is a joint initiative between our two grassroots charities, Refugee Radio and Conversation Over Borders. Increasingly, the tourism industry is looking towards sustainability, responding to public demand and local environmental policy. This monograph explores the concept of sustainability in the context of heritage and tourism studies, as well as examining the practices adopted to realize or enhance the sustainability of these industries. Beginning with a broad overview, outlining the theory and scholarly landscape, this book then focuses on cases of sustainable tourism in Japan, exploring the concept of ‘mottainai’. Mottainai is a traditional Japanese term and means an ethical attitude towards the use of a range of resources needed for human life. This Japanese word can be understood as ‘what a waste’, and can promote the environmentally-friendly way of life, encouraging reduce, reuse and recycle. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of heritage, tourism, and sustainability management; both those interested in Japan specifically, and those who are interested in new approaches for sustainability in tourism management.

This book constitutes the refereed post-conference proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Digital Heritage, EuroMed 2020, held virtually in November 2020. The 37 revised project papers and 30 revised short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 326 submissions. The papers are on topics such as digital data acquisition technologies in CH/2D and 3D data capture methodologies and data processing; remote sensing for archaeology and cultural heritage management and monitoring; interactive environments and applications; reproduction techniques and rapid prototyping in CH; e-Libraries and e-Archives in cultural heritage; virtual museum applications (e-Museums and e-Exhibitions); visualisation techniques (desktop, virtual and augmented reality); storytelling and authoring tools; tools for education; 2D and 3D GIS in cultural heritage; and on-site and remotely sensed data collection.

Virtual heritage has been explained as virtual reality applied to cultural heritage, but this definition only scratches the surface of the fascinating applications, tools and challenges of this fast-changing interdisciplinary field. This book provides an accessible but concise edited coverage of the main topics, tools and issues in virtual heritage. Leading international scholars have provided chapters to explain current issues in accuracy and precision; challenges in adopting advanced animation techniques; shows how archaeological learning can be developed in Minecraft; they propose mixed reality is conceptual rather than just technical; they explore how useful Linked Open Data can be for art history; explain how accessible photogrammetry can be but also ethical and practical issues for applying at scale; provide insight into how to provide interaction in museums involving the wider public; and describe issues in evaluating virtual heritage projects not often addressed even in scholarly papers. The book will be of particular interest to students and scholars in museum studies, digital archaeology, heritage studies, architectural history and modelling, virtual environments.

Situated at the intersection of cultural heritage and local community, this book enlarges our understanding of the Indigenous peoples of southern México and northern Central America who became detached from “the ancient Maya” through colonialism, government actions, and early twentieth-century anthropological and archaeological research. Through grass-roots heritage programs, local communities are reconnecting with a much valorized but distant past. Maya Cultural Heritage explores how community programs conceived and implemented in a collaborative style are changing the relationship among, archaeological practice, the objects of archaeological study, and contemporary ethnolinguistic Mayan communities. Rather than simply describing Maya sites, McAnany concentrates on the dialogue nurtured by these participatory heritage programs, the new “heritage-scapes” they foster, and how the diverse Maya communities of today relate to those of the past.

Mega-events have long been used by cities as a strategy to secure global recognition and attract future economic investment. However, while cultural mega-events like the European Capital of Culture have become increasingly popular, cities have begun questioning the traditional model of other events such as the Olympic Games with many candidate cities cancelling bids in recent years. This approach to planning and developing cities through mega-events introduces a broad range of physical effects and nuanced institutional changes for cities, particularly for the more sensitive heritage areas of cities. This book explores these issues by first examining the dynamics of cities’ attempts to reduce overall costs and increase the sustainability of these large events by further embedding them within the existing fabric of the city and second by studying in depth the impact on the heritage of host cities. This book investigates three World Heritage Cities: Genoa, Liverpool and Istanbul, each of which have hosted the European Capital of Culture and introduced a variety of opportunities and risks for their heritage. The book highlights the potential benefits and challenges of integrating event and heritage planning to provide lessons that can help future historic cities and heritage decision makers better prepare for such events.
