Chinese External Medicine is the branch of TCM concerned with diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect the body’s surface, unlike TCM Internal Medicine whereby the focus is on internal organ systems. External medicine, or wai ke, refers to conditions that can be seen by the eye or palpated directly such as traumatic injuries, skin diseases, breast lumps, hemorrhoids, male genital problems and so on. Despite the common nature of many conditions covered by Chinese external medicine, until the publication of this book, little had been done to introduce these essential diagnostic and treatment methods to the West. Eight chapters in the text are devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of sores and ulcerations, breast conditions, goiter, skin lesions, sexually transmitted diseases, anorectal conditions, male urogenital conditions, peripheral vascular diseases and other external conditions, with 92 external conditions in total. Internal therapies, medicinal formulas, external applications, and acupuncture treatments are provided along with both Chinese pinyin and characters for easy reference. Sixty representative case studies are also presented here, making this book the first comprehensive English language text on Chinese External Medicine.

This book discusses nearly 40 common gynecological conditions associated with menstruation, pregnancy, vaginal discharge, postpartum conditions, abnormal bleeding, and other miscellaneous gynecological conditions. Representative cases for each condition are provided here with discussions that illustrate the analytical thinking process behind effective TCM pattern differentiation and treatment. TCM treatments mainly include Chinese medicinal prescriptions combined with acupuncture and Chinese prepared medicines. One unique feature of the text is found in the discussion provided by our esteemed Western co-author, which serves to compare, corroborate and contrast the various approaches to diagnosis and treatment within both China and in Western clinics. Students of Chinese medicine will also find the study questions at the end of each section to be a useful aid for exam preparation and continuing study.

In the practice of TCM, there is no complaint more common than pain. This text describes the treatment of pain syndromes according to the standard of care practiced among the professional Chinese medicine doctors in modern China. Because modern TCM in China commonly exists in an integrated environment, the topics include both patient-centered complaints such as “headache”, as well as Western designations such as “thoracic outlet syndrome”. Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders include many of the most common conditions encountered in clinical practice, affecting women and men , children and the elderly equally. This book is designed primarily for overseas readers. It aims to provide real-life case studies and references for teachers and students of international TCM, acupuncture colleges, acupuncturists, and biomedical doctors who are interested in TCM and acupuncture. It is also geared to the general reader to familiarize them with the advantages of treating ophthalmic and otolaryngological disorders with TCM. This book is practical and is highly readability. It took more than two years to complete. During the writing process, there were many group discussions where the book was reviewed and revised. However, despite the authors’ best efforts, this book is still a work on progress. We invite the readers to send their comments, corrections and suggestions to supplement, amend, and improve when reprinted.
