Tenth Scandinavian Conference On Artificial Intelligence

The Scandinavian Conference on Artificial Intelligence is one of the regional AI conferences in Europe. This title includes contributions that exemplify the diversity of research in artificial intelligence and confirm the achievement and magnitude of 25 years AI research in Scandinavia.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has featured widely in the news recently. It is vital to the continued development of computer science and informatics, and is indispensable for the effective functioning of a multitude of systems in fields such as medicine, economics, linguistics, philosophy, psychology and logical analysis, as well as industry. This book presents the proceedings of the 13th Scandinavian Conference on Artificial Intelligence (SCAI 2015), held in Halmstad, Sweden, in November 2015. SCAI is the main biennial conference for the AI research communities of Scandinavia, but also attracts the attendance of a wide range of international participants. The book features 17 accepted papers from the conference as well as extended abstracts describing the work of six Ph.D. students who presented their research-in-progress to a panel of experts in the doctoral symposium which forms part of the conference. A wide range of topics are covered, including machine learning, data mining, logical reasoning, robotics and planning, and the papers included here focus on both the theory and practical applications of AI. The book will be of interest to all those wishing to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field of AI.

The Nordic countries are traditionally strong in the application of new computer technology. This work represents the state of the art in some of the artificial intelligence areas currently subject to active R&D. International researchers present 24 papers in the following areas: automated reasoning; qualitative reasoning; machine learning; neural networks; and knowledge-based systems. Both basic and applied AI research are represented.

There was a time when AI was seen by many as science fiction, i.e., the healthy endeavour of speculating about the future. Now the future is here. AI has passed from being a visionary discipline to lying at the core of many commercial enterprises. AI programs scattered through the web influence nowadays our lives: by extracting profiles and offering tailored advertisement, helping us in our searches, establishing social networks, providing entertainment...And not just in the net, but also in the physical world. In Japan there are robots that guide customers through marketplaces advising them where to find the product matching their needs, and realistic replicas of university professors allow them to teach their lectures a hundred kilometres away from the classroom. Not to speak about intelligent prostheses and remote high-precision surgery. In the Catalan-speaking world there are no robots in marketplaces yet, but it is coming. Recently, the first commercial humanoid robot was built. Since AI technology is becoming reasonably mature, companies are progressively relying on it. The Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence (ACIA) tries to promote synergies within the research community and also between the different actors playing a role in the development of AI: from universities to industry, from governmental departments to the information society, from entertainment enterprises to citizen services.

This volume constitutes the thoroughly refereed conference proceedings of the 25th International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Other Applications of Applied Intelligend Systems, IEA/AIE 2012, held in Dalian, China, in June 2012. The total of 82 papers selected for the proceedings were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The Eighth Scandinavian Conference on Artificial Intelligence continues a tradition of being one of the most important regional AI conferences in Europe. Keith Downing focuses on the low road to artificial intelligence, that is, the development of AI through evolutionary artificial life approaches. The topics of the accepted papers range from multi-agent systems, robots, natural languages and machine learning to general knowledge-based systems and formal approaches to AI. This collection of papers together exemplifies the diversity of research in artificial intelligence today. Two of the invited speakers, both focus on vision, although each from slightly different viewpoints. One considers biological models for vision and its consequences for artificial vision, whereas the other considers the relation between real world objects and their internal representation in robots. The last keynote speaker, presents answer set programming, a new idea for declarative programming.
