Practical information for teens and their families. Praise for the previous edition: This very unusual book...is loaded with the kind of information disabled teens often need but may be too embarrassed to ask for. --Booklist The teen years are some of the most demanding. Even the most well-adjusted youth struggles with the intense daily challenges of friends, family, school and wider society. But these problems pale in comparison to those faced by teenagers with a handicap or chronic illness such as spina bifida or cystic fibrosis. "Get over it" or "it's just a phase" is idle advice and little more than offensive. "Easy for you to say," is the teenager's often-heard -- and reasonable -- response. Easy for You to Say profiles the lives of uniquely challenged teens as they work hard to make sense of the world and their places in it. The questions they pose are frank and courageous, many include street language that teens can identify with and readily understand. The issues front and center in their lives are addressed, such as family, doctors and medical issues, friends and dating, school and work, alcohol and street drugs, medications and sexuality. Useful charts give reliable information on medication interactions and side effects. Kaufman is straightforward and honest, and provides solid information. Easy for You to Say to Say addresses issues that often are not easy or pretty. It offers solid practical advice, straight talk and honest answers to questions that many would be too embarrassed to ask.

Dasha is a gift. Only she’s not very gifted. Both books in the awarding-winning Breathing Sea mini-series in one omnibus edition! Dasha was born at the behest of the gods, her mother’s pledge between the world of women and the world of spirits. The Krasnograd kremlin looks to her to rule with fire, steel, and magic, just as her Imperial foremothers did. Instead, she’s shy, retiring, and the least magically talented girl her tutors have ever seen. Now that she’s almost a woman grown, she needs to learn to harness her gifts, but all she can do is have fits and useless visions. When her father offers to take her on her first journey away from Krasnograd, Dasha jumps at the chance to see her native land. But their journey quickly turns into more than a mere pleasure trip. The wide world is more dangerous than Dasha had imagined, and her rapidly growing gifts may be the most dangerous thing in it. But Dasha is not the only danger in Zem’. War is raging on its borders, and threatens to spill into Zem’ itself. No matter which side Dasha’s people choose, they may not be able to keep their freedom and their way of life. Dasha may hold the key to protecting Zem’—but she may have to lose herself in order to save her people. If you loved First Lessons or The Bear and the Nightingale, try this epic fantasy saga set in a magical Slavic world where trees walk, animals talk, and women rule. With discussion questions at the end.

Two novellas by S. Y. Abramovitsh open this collection of the best short works by three influential nineteenth-century Jewish authors. Abra- movitsh’s alter ego—Mendele the Book Peddler—introduces himself and narrates both The Little Man and Fishke the Lame. His cast of characters includes Isaac Abraham as tailor’s apprentice, choirboy, and corrupt businessman; Mendele’s friend Wine ’n’ Candles Alter; and Fishke, who travels through the Ukraine with a caravan of beggars. Sholem Aleichem’s lively stories reintroduce us to Tevye, the gregarious dairyman, as he describes the pleasures of raising his independent-minded daughters. These are followed by short monologues in which Aleichem gives voice to unforgettable characters from Eastern Europe to the Lower East Side. Finally, I. L. Peretz’s neo-hasidic tales draw on hasidic traditions in the service of modern literature. These stories provide an unsentimental look back at Jewish life in Eastern Europe. Although nostalgia occasionally colors their prose, the writers were social critics who understood the shortcomings of shtetl life. For the general reader, these translations breathe new life into the extraordinary worlds of Yiddish literature. The introduction, glossary, and biographical essays contemporaneous to each author put those worlds into context, making the book indispensable to students and scholars of Yiddish culture.

* Would you like to start a diet, stick to it, and lose ALL of the weight you wanted? * Would you like to NOT gain the weight back and remain thin for many years to come? * Would you like to easily say NO to junk food and other foods that you formerly could not resist? * Would you like to be able to make healthy eating choices at all times without struggle or feeling deprived? * Would you like to master your belly and appetites and NEVER be a slave to food and eating? * Would you like to find the inner strength to always make the best choices for you, even if those choices require a bit of sacrifice and/or discomfort? * In short, would you like to SOLVE the weight problem once and for all and enjoy your life thin and with a healthy relationship with food? Helping you to accomplish all of these points is what this book is all about. Here's the bottom line: I was stuck in obesity and binge eating for more than 20 years, during which time I 'trained' myself to believe and act upon all sorts of destructive and negative nonsense. I ate everything and anything that the mind and belly wanted. Even if I was full and my belly felt that it was about to pop, I would continue to eat nonetheless. Food was my drug. I had ZERO ability to resist food; I always gave in. I was completely trapped; overeating day after day, becoming more and more obese and sick, isolated from life and the world and filled with shame, guilt, depression and intense self-hatred. I was, in essence, trapped in a self-made prison where food was the ultimate overseer and lord. It was a vicious cycle: Sadness, rage and self-pity fueled more overeating which, in turn, caused more failure and negativity, which caused more overeating. I was perpetually sabotaging my weight toss efforts, often without realizing it, because pain and unhappiness had (tragically) become second nature. THEN I realized that if I wanted to be free of this poisonous mental chatter, I would have to work at identifying (and overwriting) the conscious and subconscious "fat" patterns that fed the insanity and kept me eating in excess and at the wrong times; the patterns that made me weak in the sight of food and caused me to always be nibbling, grazing and eating, eating and eating. I was fed up and wanted to overcome obesity once and for all. I had to create a new mental program that supported and facilitated my goals rather than destroy them. And none of this is breaking news. We've all have heard of positive thinking, affirmations and visualizations. Here I take those powerful mental tools and apply them directly to weight loss, food and eating. If you have tried to lose weight and fallen short, then implementing the simple but powerful program I outline here will help you to make measurable progress. If you are willing to walk with me and do some work, then this book can become a very powerful ally in your journey towards permanent weight loss. You will be asked to do some introspective work in a journal. You will be asked to put together a reprogramming program tailored specifically to your individual needs and situation. If you give yourself to this work and stick to it as I recommend, there is no doubt that you will begin to see some remarkable changes in the way you relate to food and eating. I had big problems waking up at 3AM and raiding the fridge. After some weeks of following this program, I went to sleep one night and, when I woke up, it was 6AM. I had not gotten up to eat! One lady that was addicted to cream donuts and double sweet latte wrote to tell me that, after following this program, she abruptly stopped. A guy who lived on pizza and beer said that after listening to the tapes for a few weeks, he woke up one morning and decided to change his diet. And, you, too can experience the breakthrough IF you make the commitment with yourself.
