This book on historical anthropology remaps the Mediterranean by reframing classical themes from early Mediterraneanist anthropology. This edited volume showcases how anthropology can contribute to an understanding of ongoing transnational dynamics and the new wave of scholarship on the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean is back as a locus of international anxiety and academic concern. It has reemerged in the international news cycle as a space of desperate crossings and tragic endings, as the site in which a refugee crisis rivalling that of the Second World War is playing out in real time for a global viewing public. The scale of the crisis has called into question Europe’s humanitarian principles and internal political union, making the Mediterranean into a mirror for long-standing tensions between norms of universalism and demands for national security. These captivating events have further raised the tide of scholars’ interest in the Mediterranean. How should ethnographers contribute to the new wave of scholarship on the Mediterranean? To what extent does the Mediterranean offer alternative forms of political relatedness to those construed from within Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East? In this volume, we reframe classical themes from early iterations of Mediterranean anthropology to address these questions in our examinations of changing dynamics across land and sea borders, bringing ethnography back to the study of the Mediterranean, and the Mediterranean – with its Mediterraneanism – back to ethnography. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal, History and Anthropology.

"Best Mediterranean Cuisine Book in the World" (Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, July 1st, 2009) The ancient Greeks venerated olive oil as a "gift of the Gods." And the people were surely right: no other food can compare in health value or multiplicity of uses to this "divine gold!" In the region around the Mediterranean Sea, olive oil is a precious and irreplaceable basic source of nourishment. In many other countries as well, its importance to good health and a well-balanced diet is receiving ever greater recognition. Less well known, however, is the fact that after the EU, Tunisia is the largest national producer of olive oil. The country exports large quantities of the highest quality extra virgin olive oil, which is highly valued by bottlers-even if Tunisia is not mentioned as the country of origin. Together with her husband, Viktoria Hassouna operates an oil mill and a plantation for the production of high-quality organic olive oil, and has thereby accumulated a vast storehouse of knowledge that she presents in this volume in an informative and vivid manner. Descriptions regarding the cultivation, manufacture and effects of olive oil are complemented by useful tips about how to use it therapeutically for promoting good health and beauty care as well as recipes for preparing traditional Tunisian dishes. For healthy and flavourful nutrition, there is nothing better than olive oil! This treasure should be on hand in every kitchen!

Can you name...Newton's 3 laws of motion? The 4 horsemen of the Apocalypse? The 5 pillars of Islam? The 6 wives of Henry VIII?The 7 kinds of plane triangles? The 8 Beatitudes? If you're not sure about the answers to the above, this is the book for you. This clever format lends itself well to quizzing and guessing, which gives it a deliciously sophisticated parlor-game quality. But for those who wish to delve a little deeper, there are thoughtful essays to go with each answer that include fascinating details and place the list in its larger cultural or historical context. Much more than a book of trivia, What Are the 7 Wonders of the World? offers a grand overview of the knowledge needed to appreciate many of the finest things in our cultural and intellectual life.
