Embarking on yet another journey, Suzanne writes about her experiences and tries to make some sense of this confusion we call American education. With a European perspective, she will develop the best of both worlds, by outlining the best of both educational systems. To balance this rather serious subject, she will insert poetry to lighten the way to a different paradigm shift. What programs are better, how are they instituted, and where can they be rearranged to enhance the educational experience? That part of the study will presently unfold.

This groundbreaking book proposes that the rise of alphabetic literacy reconfigured the human brain and brought about profound changes in history, religion, and gender relations. Making remarkable connections across brain function, myth, and anthropology, Dr. Shlain shows why pre-literate cultures were principally informed by holistic, right-brain modes that venerated the Goddess, images, and feminine values. Writing drove cultures toward linear left-brain thinking and this shift upset the balance between men and women, initiating the decline of the feminine and ushering in patriarchal rule. Examining the cultures of the Israelites, Greeks, Christians, and Muslims, Shlain reinterprets ancient myths and parables in light of his theory. Provocative and inspiring, this book is a paradigm-shattering work that will transform your view of history and the mind.

This volume was born to address the lack of classroom-oriented scholarship regarding U.S.-educated multilingual writers. Unlike prior volumes about U.S.-educated multilinguals, this book focuses solely on pedagogy--from classroom activities and writing assignments to course curricula and pedagogical support programs outside the immediate classroom. Unlike many pedagogical volumes that are written in the voice of an expert researcher-theorist, this volume is based on the notion of teachers sharing practices with teachers. All of the contributors are teachers who are writing about and reflecting on their own experiences and outcomes and interweaving those experiences and outcomes with current theory and research in the field. The volume thus portrays teachers as active, reflective participants engaged in critical inquiry. Contributors represent community college, college, and university contexts; academic ESL, developmental writing, and first-year composition classes; and face-to-face, hybrid, and online contexts. This book was developed primarily to meet the needs of practicing writing teachers in college-level ESL, basic writing, and college composition classrooms, but will also be useful to pre-service teachers in TESOL, Composition, and Education graduate programs.

This volume presents the revised lecture notes of selected talks given at the second Central European Functional Programming School, CEFP 2007, held June 23–30, 2007 at Babe ̧ s-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The summer school was organized in the spirit of the advanced progr- ming schools. CEFP focuses on involving an ever-growing number of students, researchers, andteachersfromcentral, andeasternEuropeancountries. We were glad to welcome the invited lecturers and the participants: 15 professors and 30 students from 9 di?erent universities. The intensive program o?ered a creative and inspiring environment and a great opportunity to present and exchange ideas in new topics of functional programming. The lectures covereda wide range of topics like interactive work ?ows for the Web, proving properties of lazy functional programs, lambda calculus and - stract lambda calculus machines, programming in ? mega, object-oriented fu- tional programming, and refactoring in Erlang. We are very grateful to the lecturers and researchers for the time and the e?ort they devoted to the talks and the revised lecture notes. The lecture notes were each carefully checked by reviewers selected from experts of functional programming. Afterwards the papers were revised once more by the lecturers. This revision process guaranteed that only high-quality papers are accepted in the volume of the lecture notes.
