Inti Flynn arrives in Scotland with her twin sister, Aggie, to lead a team of biologists tasked with reintroducing fourteen gray wolves into the remote Highlands. She hopes to heal not only the dying landscape, but Aggie, too, unmade by the terrible secrets that drove the sisters out of Alaska. Inti is not the woman she once was, either, changed by the harm she’s witnessed—inflicted by humans on both the wild and each other. Yet as the wolves surprise everyone by thriving, Inti begins to let her guard down, even opening herself up to the possibility of love. But when a farmer is found dead, Inti knows where the town will lay blame. Unable to accept her wolves could be responsible, Inti makes a reckless decision to protect them. But if the wolves didn’t make the kill, then who did? And what will Inti do when the man she is falling for seems to be the prime suspect? Propulsive and spell-binding, Charlotte McConaghy's Once There Were Wolves is the unforgettable story of a woman desperate to save the creatures she loves—if she isn’t consumed by a wild that was once her refuge.

"Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) was a prolific writer, priest, and an eclectic scholar. He considered collecting folk songs and lore to be among his greatest achievements. His studies of folklore led him to delve into the study of werewolves and why superstitions about lycanthropy persisted over the ages in so many cultures. In addition to providing a history of the subject in this book he also recounts in detail the story of the Maréchal de Retz, who was executed in 1440 for the serial murders of children but was also suspected of being a werewolf. This work is one of the most frequently cited studies on the subject. Bound in the original red publisher's cloth with ornate gilt title to spine and gilt ornament with figure of a wolf on the front cover." -- description from The Kelmscott Bookshop, bookseller.

Wolves lope across Gothic imagination. Signs of a pure animality opposed to humanity, in the figure of the werewolf they become liminal creatures that move between the human and the animal. Werewolves function as a site for exploring complex anxieties of difference – of gender, class, race, space, nation or sexuality – but the imaginative and ideological uses of wolves also reflect back on the lives of material animals, long persecuted in their declining habitats across the world. Werewolves therefore raise unsettling questions about the intersection of the real and the imaginary, the instability of human identities and the worldliness and political weight of the Gothic. This is the first volume concerned with the appearance of werewolves and wolves in literary and cultural texts from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. Drawing on representations of werewolves and wolves in literature, film, television and visual culture, the essays investigate the key texts of the lycanthropic canon alongside lesser-known works from the 1890s to the present. The result is an innovative study that is both theoretically aware and historically nuanced, featuring an international list of established and emerging scholars based in Britain, Europe, North America and Australia.

Definition of Lycanthropy--Marcellus Sidetes--Virgil--Herodotus--Ovid--Pliny--Agriopas--Storyfrom Petronius--Arcadian Legends--Explanation offered.WHAT is Lycanthropy? The change of manor woman into the form of a wolf, either throughmagical means, so as to enable him or her to gratify the taste for human flesh, or through judgmentof the gods in punishment for some great offence. This is the popular definition. Truly it consists in a form of madness, such as may be found in mostasylums.Among the ancients this kind of insanity went by the names of Lycanthropy, Kuanthropy, orBoanthropy, because those afflicted with it believed themselves to be turned into wolves, dogs, orcows. But in the North of Europe, as we shall see, the shape of a bear, and inAfrica that of a hyæna, were often selected in preference. A mere matter of taste! According toMarcellus Sidetes, of whose poem {Greek perì lukanðrw'pou} a fragment exists, men are attacked withthis madness chiefly in the beginning of the year, and become most furious in February; retiring forthe night to lone cemeteries, and living precisely in the manner of dogs and wolves.Virgil writes in his eighth Eclogue: --Has herbas, atque hæc Ponto mihi lecta venenaIpse dedit Moeris; nascuntur plurima Ponto. His ego sæpe lupum fieri et se conducere sylvisMoerim, sæpe animas imis excire sepulchris, Atque satas alio, vidi traducere messes. And Herodotus: --"It seems that the Neuri are sorcerers, if one is to believe the Scythians and theGreeks established in Scythia; for each Neurian changes himself, once in the year, into the form of awolf, and he continues in that form for several days, after which he resumes his former shape."--(Lib. iv. c. 105.)See also Pomponius Mela (lib. ii. c. 1) "There is a fixed time for each Neurian, at which they change, if they like, into wolves, and back again into their former condition."

Leaving behind everything but her research gear, she arrives in Greenland with a singular purpose: to follow the last Arctic terns in the world on what might be their final migration to Antarctica. Franny talks her way onto a fishing boat, and she and the crew set sail, traveling ever further from shore and safety. But as Franny’s history begins to unspool—a passionate love affair, an absent family, a devastating crime—it becomes clear that she is chasing more than just the birds. When Franny's dark secrets catch up with her, how much is she willing to risk for one more chance at redemption? Epic and intimate, heartbreaking and galvanizing, Charlotte McConaghy's Migrations is an ode to a disappearing world and a breathtaking page-turner about the possibility of hope against all odds.

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - The great farm hall was ablaze with the fire-light, and noisy with laughter and talk and many-sounding work. None could be idle but the very young and the very old: little Rol, who was hugging a puppy, and old Trella, whose palsied hand fumbled over her knitting. The early evening had closed in, and the farm-servants, come from their outdoor work, had assembled in the ample hall, which gave space for a score or more of workers. Several of the men were engaged in carving, and to these were yielded the best place and light; others made or repaired fishing-tackle and harness, and a great seine net occupied three pairs of hands. Of the women most were sorting and mixing eider feather and chopping straw to add to it. Looms were there, though not in present use, but three wheels whirred emulously, and the finest and swiftest thread of the three ran between the fingers of the house-mistress. Near her were some children, busy too, plaiting wicks for candles and lamps. Each group of workers had a lamp in its centre, and those farthest from the fire had live heat from two braziers filled with glowing wood embers, replenished now and again from the generous hearth. But the flicker of the great fire was manifest to remotest corners, and prevailed beyond the limits of the weaker lights.

Even so, when Izzy gets attacked by a werewolf, the siblings know they need to help protect her, each other, and the horses at the ranch at all costs. The children must remain on their guard and work together to face the werewolves and to protect Izzy, despite how rudely she’s been acting.
