"One of the best tribal histories . . . the product of decades of study by a layman archeologist-historian. With a rich blend of archeology, anthropology, Indian oral traditions (he gives us one of the best accounts of the Walum Olum, the fascinating hieroglyphics depicting the tribal origins of the Delaware), and documentary research, Weslager writes for the general reader as well as the scholar."--American Historical Review In the seventeenth century white explorers and settlers encountered a tribe of Indians calling themselves Lenni Lenape along the Delaware River and its tributaries in New Jersey, Delaware, eastern Pennsylvania, and southeastern New York. Today communities of their descendants, known as Delawares, are found in Oklahoma, Kansas, Wisconsin, and Ontario, and individuals of Delaware ancestry are mingled with the white populations in many other states. The Delaware Indians is the first comprehensive account of what happened to the main body of the Delaware Nation over the past three centuries. C. A. Weslager puts into perspective the important events in United States history in which the Delawares participated and he adds new information about the Delawares. He bridges the gap between history and ethnology by analyzing the reasons why the Delawares were repeatedly victimized by the white man.

So entschloss ich mich zu schweigen; vorsichtshalber bemachtigte ich mich dieser Papiere und kehrte am nachsten Morgen nach Edinburgh zuruck. Kurz darauf erhielt ich ein Schreiben von Sir Richard, worin er mir anzeigte, dass seine angegriffene Gesundheit ihn nothige, England fur langere Zeit zu verlassen; er uberschickte mir zugleich ein werthvolles Andenken als Beweis seiner Dankbarkeit, wie er sich ausdruckte. Da ich jetzt mit dem Stand der Dinge vertraut war, so erkannte ich, dass er mir mittelst dieses Briefes und dieses Geschenkes meinen Abschied gegeben hatte. Ich dachte in der ersten Zeit hausig und mit seltsamen Gefuhlen an Sir Richard;

Sky Loom offers a dazzling introduction to Native American myths, stories, and songs drawn from previous collections by acclaimed translator and poet Brian Swann. With a general introduction by Swann, Sky Loom is a stunning collection that provides a glimpse into the intricacies and beauties of story and myth, placing them in their cultural, historical, and linguistic contexts. Each of the twenty-six selections is translated and introduced by a well-known expert on Native oral literatures and offers entry into the cultures and traditions of several different tribes and bands, including the Yupiit and the Tlingits of the polar North; the Coast Salish and the Kwakwaka’wakw of the Pacific Northwest; the Navajos, the Pimas, and the Yaquis of the Southwest; the Lakota Sioux and the Plains Crees of the Great Plains; the Ojibwes of the Great Lakes; the Naskapis and the Eastern Crees of the Hudson Bay area in Canada; and the Munsees of the Northeast. Sky Loom takes the reader on a wide-ranging journey through literary traditions older than the “discovery” of the New World.

Within nineteenth-century Ojibwe/Chippewa medicine societies, and in communities at large, animals are realities and symbols that demonstrate cultural principles of North American Ojibwe nations. Living with Animals presents over 100 images from oral and written sources – including birch bark scrolls, rock art, stories, games, and dreams – in which animals appear as kindred beings, spirit powers, healers, and protectors. Michael Pomedli shows that the principles at play in these sources are not merely evidence of cultural values, but also unique standards brought to treaty signings by Ojibwe leaders. In addition, these principles are norms against which North American treaty interpretations should be reframed. The author provides an important foundation for ongoing treaty negotiations, and for what contemporary Ojibwe cultural figures corroborate as ways of leading a good, integrated life.

Using a psychological/anthropological approach that he largely invented, Wallace clearly demonstrates—better than anyone before or since—the tragedy of the Delawares’ existence, caught between the English, the French, and the Iroquois. Painting a rich tapestry of the history and culture of the Delawares and of the sociopolitical context of the fraudulent Walking Purchase of 1737, Wallace brings Teedyuscung to life before us. Born in 1700 on the outskirts of Trenton, New Jersey, Teedyuscung was barely able to earn a living as a broom and basket maker along the shabby fringes of the white settlements. He was simultaneously dependent upon, and resentful of, the invaders. The strange mixture of love and hatred for Europeans made him notorious as both the enemy and friend of white settlers. King of the Delawares, with a new preface by the author, provides a fascinating portrait of Teedyuscung, from his early years when he tried to bring white customs to the Delawares, through his long and ardent efforts to regain the lands belonging to his people, and ending with his murder in 1763 by land hungry settlers.
