This book explores the universal virtues of humility and wisdom, as well as the interdependence of those two qualities. The author then traces how western society gradually moved away from treating them as virtues and began to relegate them to the status of vices because they allegedly reflected weakness and relics of religion. Many of modern society's most serious problems have at their root, the decline of humility and wisdom. Modern culture glorifies egotism, arrogance and even narcissism. Virtual perception now replaces reality and balanced perspectives. A return to humility and wisdom holds society's best hope for survival. Through extensive historical and philosophical analysis, it demonstrates that this method was challenged in ancient times by an apocryphal notion of philosophy which eventually became confused with philosophical reasoning, and was passed on to posterity through the work of Christian theologians until it was called into question by leading thinkers of the thirteenth century. It shows how this thirteenth-century challenge influenced the growth of the Renaissance humanist movement and how this movement, in turn, passed on to modernity the same apocryphal notion of philosophy as a rhetorical theology of allegorical prefiguration.
