The Fairy Caravan

THE FAIRY CARAVAN is the story of a miniature circus, William and Alexander's Travelling Circus. It is no ordinary circus, for Alexander is a highland terrier and William is Pony Billy who draws the caravan. Beatrix Potter wrote this chapter book for older children towards the end of her writing career. She wrote it for her own pleasure and at the request of friends in America who shared her love of the Lake District and north country tales.

When Tuppeny, a guinea pig whose hair has been pulled out, is treated with the barber's hairwash prescription, his hair grows inches every day for the rest of his life.

"Fairy Caravan" is a children's tale about the strange exploits of a guinea pig. In the village of Marmalade, the guinea pigs are in awe at the advertisement by Messrs. Ratton and Scratch, Hair Specialists, promising that their hair products will help them grow long hair, something the pigs would all like. Their dream finally comes true when the specialists visit the village with their products. Hesitant to try the new products, they finally settle on one of them, Tuppence, to test their products. They slather him up with the whole bottle and watch keenly to see what happens. But when the product begins to take effect, the results are not what they were expecting, causing poor Tuppence to flee from the village in search of new adventure...

Chengli is an orphaned errand boy who lives in Chang'an China in 630 A.D. His mother has died from illness and his father is presumed dead after disappearing into the desert when Chengli was a baby. Now thirteen, Chengli feels ready for independence. He is drawn to the desert, beckoned by the howling of strange winds and the hope of learning something about his father--who he was and how he died. Chengli joins a caravan to travel down the merchant route known as the Silk Road, but it is a dangerous life, as his father knew. The desert is harsh, and there are many bandits--bandits interested in Chengli's caravan because a princess, her servants, and royal guards are traveling with them. But the desert is full of amazing places and life-changing experiences, as the feisty princess learns the meaning of friendship and Chengli learns the heroism of which he is capable.
