Excerpt from The Spoken Language of Japan: A Course of Exercises in Familiar Conversation In the following table, the Kana signs are given, not in the customary Japanese course of succession, but in conjunction with English equivalents of the various syllables, arranged in an order that is judged convenient for reference by foreign students. It will be observed that several of the signs are more than once repeated, with the addition of the side marks and O, which denote certain changes of utterance. The effect of 'v is to harden the original consonant sound while 0, used only for syllables that begin with an aspirate or dento-labial, indicates a change to the sound of the English labial p. By these means, lea is changed to ya; te to de; hi to bi or pi fu to bu. Or pa etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Historical Grammar of Japanese The chief object of this work is to provide material for study of the affiliations of the Japanese language, and, in so far as philological evidence is of value, for inquiry into the origins of the Japanese race but it has been so planned as to be, I hope, Of interest to students of general linguistic theory. I trust also that advanced students of Japanese, especially those who wish to read early and medieval texts, will find it useful as a work Of reference and even those who are concerned only with the modern spoken and written languages will, I believe, find many of their difficulties removed by gaining some knowledge of the development of grammatical forms and the growth of common idioms. Excerpt from Handbook of English-Japanese Etymology The fact is that the several foundation forms serve various purposes. One who wishes to name them may therefore take his choice. He may select some one marked feature and find in that the name, with however the certainty that it will prove more or less misleading. The only alternative is to content one's self with the simple numerical designations first, second, third, and fourth. To the writer the latter seems the better course: and he would have followed it, but for the desire to keep company with others. He has substituted stem for root because it is somewhat less misleading, and also because it has been adopted by Mr. Aston in the fourth edition of his Gram mar of the Japanese Spoken Language.
