The Gospel Of St John

The director of the Navarre Bible project at the University of Navarre in Spain brings together his thoughts on one of the most intriguing Gospel writers, St. John. St. John has been called “the theologian” because of the theological depth of his writing. He is often symbolically represented as an eagle because his writings soar to the heights of the divinity just as the eagle soars upward to the sun. If the Gospels are “the heart of all of Scripture,” and therefore the object of special veneration and study, then the Gospel of St. John deserves special attention as the summit of the four.

B.F. Westcott's classic work on the Greek text of the Gospel of John was the fruit of forty years of research, the book having been commissioned around 1860 and published posthumously by his son. The Greek text is that of Westcott and Hort. Readings of select Greek uncial manuscripts are placed beneath the text in the case of textual variants noted in the Introduction, and all the more important readings are treated in special critical notes, which are indexed.

The final book of the Bible, Revelation prophesies the ultimate judgement of mankind in a series of allegorical visions, grisly images and numerological predictions. According to these, empires will fall, the "Beast" will be destroyed and Christ will rule a new Jerusalem. With an introduction by Will Self.

Lightfoot, one of the great biblical scholars of the modern era. In the spring of 2013, Ben Witherington III discovered hundreds of pages of biblical commentary by Lightfoot in the Durham Cathedral Library. Lightfoot had long wanted to write a commentary on the Gospel of John, but he was unable to do so due to more pressing demands on his time, as well as his respect for his colleague B. F. Westcott. As a result, though he continued to compile notes on the text, they never saw the light of day until now. Included alongside the commentary are Lightfoot's long out-of-print essays on the historical reliability of the Fourth Gospel. Now on display for all to see, these commentary volumes reveal a scholar well ahead of his time, one of the great minds of his or any generation.
