Excerpt from The History of Chemistry, Vol. 2 of 2 His Writings were exceedingly numerous, and treated of science, theology, metaphysics, and politics. Of his theological, metaphysical, and political writings it is not our business in this work to take any notice. His scientific works treat of electricity, optics, and chemistry. As an electrician he was respectable; as an Optician, a compiler; as a chemist, a discoverer. He wrote also a book on perspective which I have never had an opportunity of perusing. Excerpt from The History of Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 2 It is natural to feel a desire to be acquainted with the origin and the progress of such a science; and to know something of the history and character of those numerous votaries to whom it is indebted for its pro gress and improvement. The object of this little Work is to gratify these laudable wishes, by taking a rapid View of the progress of Chemistry, from its first rude and disgraceful beginnings till it has reached its pre sent state of importance and dignity. I shall divide the subject into fifteen chapters. In'the first I shall treat of Alchymy, which may be considered as the in auspicious commencement of the science, and which, in fact, consists of little else than an account of dupes and impostors; every where so full of fiction and oh scurity, that it is a hopeless and almost impossible task to reach the truth. In the second Chapter I shall endeavour to point out the few small chemical rills, which were known to the ancients. These I shall fol low in their progress, in the succeeding chapters, till at last, augmented by an infinite number of streams owing at once from a thousand different quarters, they have swelled to the mighty river, which now ows ou majestically, wafting wealth and information to the civilized world. Excerpt from History of Chemistry, Vol. 2 of 2 A History of the Sciences has been planned to present for the information of the general public a historic record of the great divisions of science. Each volume is the work of a writer who is accepted as an authority on his own subject-matter. The books are not to be considered as primers, but present thoroughly digested information on the relations borne by each great division of science to the changes in human ideas and to the intellectual development of mankind. The monographs explain how the principal scientific discoveries have been arrived at and the names of the workers to whom such discoveries are due. The books will comprise each about 200 pages. Each volume will contain from 12 to 16 illustrations, including portraits of the discoverers and explanatory views and diagrams. Each volume contains also a concise but comprehensive bibliography of the subject-matter. The following volumes will be issued during the course of the autumn of 1909. Excerpt from A History of Chemistry This volume is the outgrowth of a series of talks which the author has for several years given to his students at the Institute of Technology, the hearers being members of the senior class specializing in chemistry, and hence familiar with its more impor tant facts and principles. The lectures have dealt in a direct informal way with the fundamental ideas of the science: their origin, their philosophical basis, the critical periods in their development, and the personalities of the great men whose efforts have contributed to that development.
