The meeting included a range of views regarding the risks and challenges inherent to the recent developments in international seafood trade with views from government officials, business representatives and academia. The symposium highlighted that the seafood sector is extremely dynamic and is increasingly becoming a global sector. Risks include the pressure of global demand on capture fisheries that are often overexploited, meeting the higher sanitary and phytosanitary requirements being set by the markets and the development of voluntary ecolabels. Opportunities include better management of marine resources, further development of the aquaculture sector, advancement of technology to meet sanitary and phytosanitary requirements and enhancement of the value-added sector in developing countries. Fish and fish products are among the most traded food commodities: close to 40 percent by volume ends up in international markets. Yet around three-quarters of fish exports finish up in just three markets: the European Union, Japan and the United States of America. China is an increasingly important player both as an exporter and an importer. Consumers expect that the fish they have access to will be safe and of acceptable quality, regardless of where they are produced or ultimately consumed. This has given rise to issues regarding fish quality and safety, international trade, risk analysis and harmonization of standards. These and other issues are addressed in this document. Since 1984, the FAO GLOBEFISH project (through a project unit established within the Fishery and Aquaculture Department of FAO www.fao.org/in-action/globefish) has been providing Governments, national and international stakeholders with relevant data, information and knowledge on fish trade in order to assist them in designing and implementing efficient and inclusive market and trade strategies. These strategies contribute to the sustainable development of the fish trade sector (including the economic, social and environmental aspects) and, at the same time, contribute to improving food and nutrition security and strengthening livelihood opportunities and are directly linked to SO4. The publication contains a detailed quarterly update on market trends for a variety of major commodities. Combining the price information collected for the European Price Report with other market survey data collected by FAO GLOBEFISH, the report provides a detailed update on market trends for a variety of major commodities. Key market data is presented in a time series tabular or graphical form with a written analysis of trends and key events and news affecting commodities such as tuna, groundfish, small pelagics, shrimp, salmon, fishmeal and fish oil, cephalopods, bivalves and crustacea.

Can Americans continue to add more seafood to their diets without fear of illness or even death? Seafood-caused health problems are not widespread, but consumers are at risk from seafood-borne microbes and toxinsâ€"with consequences that can range from mild enteritis to fatal illness. At a time when legislators and consumer groups are seeking a sound regulatory approach, Seafood Safety presents a comprehensive set of practical recommendations for ensuring the safety of the seafood supply. This volume presents the first-ever overview of the field, covering seafood consumption patterns, where and how seafood contamination occurs, and the effectiveness of regulation. A wealth of technical information is presented on the sources of contaminationâ€"microbes, natural toxins, and chemical pollutantsâ€"and their effects on human health. The volume evaluates methods used for risk assessment and inspection sampling.
