It 'is utterly impossible to give every writer a place in so small a compass, and, as a matter of fact, justice cannot be done every section of our broad land. Especially do we realize this to be true, when we discover that in the South alone there are over writers, to say naught of the remaining three-sections. While we trust a spirit of fairness shall per vade our work, we know that in the judgment of many wise critics some names will be omitted contrary to their opinion, and many inserted which they think should have been omitted. Excerpt from Literature of the South To give an introduction to the study of Literature as it has developed in the South leading to the fur ther study of the works of southern authors, is the purpose of this book. Literature and history go hand in hand, for, when all is said, the literature of a people is the expression of their life. T o understand Literature, then, we must understand its source. I have endeavored to indicate the characteristic of the succeeding periods of literary development, and to trace the influence of historical events upon the life and consequent expression of the people of the South. Excerpt from American Literature In this volume the story of American literature is briefly told for the benefit of young Americans It is written in a style which is both simple and familiar, avoiding on the one hand the verbiage of the larger manuals for schools, and on the other the prattle of the so-called first books for children. Brevity rather than condensation has been sought; care has been taken not to encumber the text with unnecessary or irrelevant details; dates have in most cases been relegated to the summaries at the close of the various chapters; criticisms are brief, often summed up in a single terse, easily remembered expression; illustrative extracts are confined to familiar quotations with which everybody ought to be acquainted. In the preparation of the book four objects have been constantly borne in mind: (1) to make the study interesting; (2) to give due prominence to the most essential facts; (3) to lead students to a first-hand acquaintance with the best and most famous works of American authors; and (4) to meet a very general demand among teachers for a simple, practical text book on the history of our literature adapted to the comprehension of pupils in the elementary schools. A good deal of space has necessarily been given to minor authors and to living writers who will probably be forgotten before another century.
