Excerpt from Rough Notes and Memoranda: Relating to the Natural History of the Bermudas IN giving these Notes to the public, I think it right to state that some of them have already appeared in a little work, entitled, The Naturalist in Bermuda, by the late John Mathew Jones, published in 1859; Mr. Jones having first visited Bermuda in '1854. Although my father landed in the Bermudas in October, (840, it was not until September, 1846, that he really commenced his Notes on the natural history of the islands; the responsibilities of his office being very onerous during those first six years, he was then prevented. But in 1846, circumstances having changed, he was more at liberty to follow his own inclinations than hitherto. The late Mr. Hunt Marriott, then an officer in the same department, being, like my father, imbued with a taste for natural science, observing that he thought it was a pity so little was known of the natural history of the islands, my father proposed an effort should' be made to work it out; whereupon Mr. Marriott at once offered his assistance, saying he would do his best in collecting and describing the various forms of insect life, if my father would take the birds; and so far as my father individually was con concerned, he continued it up to the period of his departure from Bermuda, in May, 1855. Bermuda is a fascinating group of islands in the North Atlantic. Located approximately 1,000 miles north of The Bahamas, and 600 miles off the coast of the United States, Bermuda enjoys a sub-tropical climate and a shoreline washed by crystal waters warmed by The Gulf Stream. Despite its small size and relative isolation, Bermuda is an exciting destination for birdwatchers. Although there are only 22 resident breeding bird species, the complex array of migrants and vagrants that visit the island every year have resulted in a list of nearly 360 different species. This impressive list of species ensures that there will always be something new and interesting to see in Bermuda.Written in a style that should appeal to both the serious ornithologist and those merely interested in identifying a common species seen in the garden, this guide aims to give the reader a general overview of Bermuda's birds in an easy to read and understandable format. Illustrated throughout with colour photographs, the book contains full accounts of the more common species found in Bermuda, along with all the resident species, such as the legendary Cahow. Information includes detailed descriptions for males, females and immatures, identification tips and comparisons with similar, potentially confusing species, habitat preferences and the species' overall status on the island. The book also contains a full species list for Bermuda, including all confirmed species recorded for the island. This list gives the reader information on abundance ratings of each species and its year-round status on the island.
