Rick Stein's Far Eastern Odyssey is an ambitious journey, avoiding the beaten track and tourist hot-spots, in search of the authentic food of Southeast Asia. In this accompanying book to the major BBC series, Rick shares his favourite recipes and some well-known classic dishes inspired by the fragrant ingredients and recipes he sampled from local chefs, family-run restaurants, street vendors and market stalls. In Cambodia, Rick learns how to make a national dish Samlor kako, a stir-fried pork and vegetable soup flavoured with an array of spices; in Vietnam he is shown the best recipe for Pho Bo, a Vietnamese beef noodle soup; and in Thailand, Rick tries Geng Leuong Sai Gung Lai Sai Bua, a yellow curry made with prawns and lotus shoots that you won't find outside the country. Rick Stein's Far Eastern Odyssey includes over 150 new recipes from Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Bali each complemented by Rick's colourful anecdotes from the trip and beautiful on-location photography. This is a visually-stunning culinary tribute to Southeast Asian cooking that evokes the magic of bustling markets, the sizzle of oil and the aromatic steam from a Far Eastern kitchen.

"This volume is an actual transcript from a journal kept during a tour made in North America in the spring and summer of 1883, in company with my two friends, Meysey Clive, of Whitfield Court, County of Hereford, and my brother-in-law, Arthur Mitchell, of The Ridge, Wiltshire. Our object was not only to enjoy a pleasant trip and to see as much as we conveniently could of a new country, but also to collect as much information as possible, more especially as regards farming and emigration, in the hope of thus being able to assist those in England who might be thinking of seeking a new home across the Atlantic ..."--Preface.

Excerpt from The New Far East The intense interest aroused by the outbreak of the war between Japan and Russia has caused an immediate demand for a fourth edition of this book. It has been thought advisable to re-issue it absolutely without alteration and I venture to think that these pages, written in 1898, will rather gain in interest when read by the light of the stirring events which have occurred since that year. To what I have written in the Preface to the Second Edition (to be found in the next few pages) I have nothing to add, save to call attention to the three great historical changes that have since come about: - The Alliance of Britain and Japan, whereby British policy in the Far East has, at last, entered on the "Clear Course" which I have so long strenuously advocated, and which is treated of in Chapter X. The War between Russia and Japan, the inevitable struggle for preponderance in the Far East, and Japan's immediate exposure of the hollowness of Muscovite bluff. The unmistakable symptoms of the gradual Awakening of China under Japanese impulse, the Chinese turning, in their extremity, more and more towards their late foes, whose just and humane conduct in the repression of the "Boxer" outbreak of 1900 so deeply impressed the Celestial mind.
