Ovid's Art of Love (Ars Amatoria) and its sequel Remedies for Love (Remedia Amoris) are among the most notorious poems of the ancient world. In AD 8, the emperor Augustus exiled Ovid to the shores of the Black Sea for "a poem and a mistake." Whatever the mistake may have been, the poem was certainly the Ars Amatoria, which the emperor found a bit too immoral. In exile, Ovid composed Sad Things (Tristia), which included a defense of his life and work as brilliant and cheeky as his controversial love manuals. In a poem addressed to Augustus (Tristia 2), he argues, "Since all of life and literature is one long, steamy sex story, why single poor Ovid out?" While seemingly groveling at the emperor's feet, he creates an image of Augustus as capricious tyrant and himself as suffering artist that wins over every reader (except the one to whom it was addressed). Bringing together translations of the Ars Amatoria, Remedia Amoris, and Tristia 2, Julia Dyson Hejduk's The Offense of Love is the first book to include both the offense and the defense of Ovid's amatory work in a single volume. Hejduk's elegant and accurate translations, helpful notes, and comprehensive introduction will guide readers through Ovid's wickedly witty poetic tour of the literature, mythology, topography, religion, politics, and (of course) sexuality of ancient Rome. When the world speaks of "love," it often means unconditional acceptance. Many churches have adopted this mind-set in their practice of membership and discipline-if they have not done away with such structures entirely. "Yet God's love and God's gospel are different than what the world expects," writes Jonathan Leeman. They're centered in his character, which draws a clear boundary between what is holy and what is not. It's this line that the local church should represent in its member practices, because the careful exercise of such authority "is God's means for guarding the gospel, marking off a people, and thereby defining his love for the world." So how should churches receive and dismiss members? How should Christians view their submission to the church? Are there dangers in such submission? The Church and the Surprising Offense of God's Love responds with biblical, theological, and practical guidance-from both corporate and individual perspectives. It's a resource that will help pastors and their congregations upend worldly conceptions and recover a biblical understanding and practice of church authority.

Overcoming the Spirit of Offense exposes how the spirit of offense has not only infiltrated the body of Christ but how it has damaged the bride and has kept her from fulfilling her destiny and purpose. Because of the invisible wounds that she has suffered, she walks without much power. The book helps the reader to be able to see and recognize how the spirit operates, and it teaches how to come in the opposite spirit called love in order to get free. It is fully equipped with scripture for validation and real-life situations and testimonies that help the reader with their own similar situations. There are testimonies that not only inspire the reader but also challenge them. A testimony of a young woman named Julia will leave the reader in awe of the Fathers heart and what He can do when we choose to love instead of being offended. This teaching has been used to minister to hurting pastors and prophets, drug addicts and broken women, and when they choose to forgive the offender, they are almost always completely healed, both physically and emotionally. It has been used to teach the unbeliever about the love of God, the price that Jesus paid, and how the enemy pottered them through offense. This is a teaching that bears fruit.
